I'm having aluminum wrapped on the fascia boards while the new gutters are
being put on.

Is the new wrap supposed to be "L" shaped, with the bottom edge just tacked
to the bottom of the existing fascia? Or, is it supposed to be "J" shaped
with a little bend along the back bottom edge so it wraps up behind the
existing fascia?

It is more work to tuck the wrap behind the fascia, especially with the
vinyl soffit j-channel right there. But it looks tacky otherwise.

I personally wouldn't do the wrapping at all for that reason but sounds
too late for that option already...

Since it's already up you might me thankful that it's an 'L' configuration.
It should be self draining!

My new (to me) house resembles that remark......
Place where the addition roof dies into the original roof, there is a
10-inch difference in the gutter lines. As such, right at the bottom of the
woven valley, there is a little dead spot under the addition roof where
water backs up, and gets behind the wrapped fascia. Evidence of old water
damage in wall below, which inspector and I attributed to minor roof leak
around a vent stack, but closer look after purchase showed fascia wrap had
been bent right there to allowed the backed up water to drain. Aluminum
fascia skin and soffit provided water path back to wall, and ran under
siding, and rotted out kitchen window, which previous owner half-assedly
replaced. Stuck finger behind the aluminum wrap, and came back with wood
punk, so I do have rot in there. Roof needs replacing soon anyway, so
probably have to replace some deck and rafter tails while they have it open.
Pondering stripping all the fascia wrap at same time, and replacing any
rotted sections with something more durable. Definitely gonna send some pix
to some experts I happen to be related to, and come up with an artful way to
flash and drip-edge the area to keep water out of there, including if
neccessary a catch box in corner, and downspout down through the deck.
(which also needs replacing soon- sigh- but that is another tale of woe....)
