Default alternate gas suppliers useless?

NYS allows you to select an alternate natural gas supplier.
NiMo, e.g., still delivers the gas and bills you. Does this
save money for anyone?

1. NiMo provides a list of suppliers' websites, but not
prices.

2. You go to one supplier's site to get its price. There's
only a phone number and a statement that they'll probably save
you 7%, allegedly because they don't have to pay the same
taxes that NiMo does.

3. You phone; 1/2 the time they're not taking new customers.

4. If they are, they'll be glad to send a quote.

5. The quote includes a compulsory service plan that increases
the price 10-30% over NiMo's price. (Agway's price is 30%
higher.)

6. Repeat from step 2.

Is it just me, or has anyone made this work? I'm starting to
suspect that this is only a political scam designed to make
voters think that they've gotten a great new benefit, which in
reality doesn't save money, and may cost money.

Thanks.

No gripe with the above - a basic factual Q - does anyone save $ doing
this, OK.

lots cut

Hmm, quite a leap, do you also think there was a 2nd shot from the
grassy knoll? Which voters do you allege think "they've gotten a
great new benefit"? More like the voters (such as yourself) don't
think its worth a hill o' beans!

I've had a gas contract (in a different state) for commercial
properties, and then that company quit doing it. At the time, I did
it to hedge the rate. The rate I signed up for was actually HIGHER
than the utility's rate AT THE TIME that I signed up for it, but was
locked in, and I was betting that the Utility's rates would go up over
the next heating season.

Residential customers are not anywhere near as attractive for each
one, and lots of times they don't have advantageous choices. Similar
situation with electricity.
