Can anyone tell me and its more just out of interest at the moment.

Are GAL chips an off the shelf component like an 74LS00 for example or are
they a chip that gets programmed, I seem to remember something about
software for programming GALs.

Onece a GAL has been programmed can it be duplicated ?

Or is what has been suggested to me about the chip self destructing by tying
data lines to 5v correct.
