Default Portable CD player problem

Hi all,

I have a problem with my Sharp portable CD player / radio. All my CD's are
skipping. I've cleaned the lens but I think it's probably a motor /
mechanical problem. When I play a disc a track will play for a few moments
and then the disc will stop spinning and come back to life again.

I think its probably had it. I was just wondering if anybody knows what the
life of a portable CD player actually is? I listen to CD's on this player
when i'm working in the office. I've played it constantly every other week
for over 2 years. I reckon its played over 2000 hours of music.

Is it worth buying a lens cleaner or is it most likely mechanical?

The laser in the pickup head is probably weak from use. This is common. It
is time to get a new CD player. Servicing would be too expensive.

Hi,

The laser output power may fade - 2000 hours should be no problem.
What I would expect is that the spinning up from 1x to overspeed
may have some side effects.
Does this effect occur with shock protection on / off - maybe it still works
without shockprotection (= 1x speed - no spinup).
The spinup problem might come from worse readability / to less laserpower -
or too much powerconsumption from the turntable motor - worn bearing -
defect motor brushes. The increased powerconsumption can influence the
output
stages of the actuators ...
1) Is the effect different with esp on/off ?
2) The only thing additional to cleaning is to change the output power
calibration
of the pickup. A potentiometer at the pickup calibrates the feedback signal
from
the monitor diode. This potentiometer is normally from laserdiode to
ground - weakening
the feedback signal. By slightly reducing its resistance - the aging / power
fade can be
compensated. - for some time - if its a marginal effect - a subtle
change would help a
lot.
Before manipulation - I would do check if problems appear with all types of
disc CD,CDR,CDRW - problems with CDRW are a good indication for faded
laser.
