Greeting all, I just purchased a portable DVD player which is capable of
video/audio input and can display TV broadcasts. Now I need a small
portable TV tuner to be able to watch TV on it. Some have suggested to use
the tuner inside an old VCR but I need something small and portable and I
would think that the tuner components are spread out on the circuit board
making it impractable unless I'm mistaken.

Some have also suggested that I use a TV PC card for computer. This would
be ideal because it's small and cheap but is this possible or practable?
One problem I see is that there is no video/audio out on these cards so how
would I get the video/audio signal out to my DVD player? The other problem
is how to power it. Which contacts on a PCI card are for power in? Any
help on this will be greatly appreciated.

What you want to do is complex. The processed tuner output on the PC type
board may not even be a compatible signal type in impedance to match to the
impedance of your player's input. The addressing to operate the tuner will
require external software, and control, as such of what the computer will
perform. This is why it is low in cost. It is missing a lot of required
things.

You should look around for a portable tuner unit. Sony and Panasonic used
to have one for consumer level. In the professional level it does exist,
but the cost is not low. These professional units give excellent reception,
and specifications. But the cost is much more than your player.

It would be much cheaper for you to go out and buy the 4 or 6 inch Casio
pocket TV. It would be less cumbersome to handle, and can fit in your
pocket. I have seen these for as low as about $70 US. Sony had a model that
is expensive, and it may have an A/V output. It was selling for about $400
US. I have not seen this one for a long time.

So why didn't you stick with the original thread, in the newsgroup you
originally posted to, instead of bringing it to a newsgroup about repair?

This is not a repair issue. And since you are trying to follow up a
comment from someone else somewhere else, you should have stayed there
and asked in the original thread.

instead of asking "well that's a solution, I need more details" you
shift to another newsgroup where you start practically from scratch
again. Someone in sci.electronics.basics provided the bit about
the computer card, but you didn't stay there. When this happens, usually
it is becuase the poster doesn't like the answer they get, it doesn't
fit the answer they expect, so they move to another newsgroup hoping
to find the answer they were expecting in the first place.

This isn't primarily an issue of bandwidth. It's about how idiots
like you don't get the help they seek because a) you don't ask in
the right place, b) you don't provide enough details, c) you don't
continue in the thread after some solutions are offered, and d)you
don't like the answers anyway.

There is no indication that you can do what you want, except by
buying something. If you don't have a clue about the best newsgroup
for asking the question, and you can't stick with the thread when
someone does offer a solution, it doesn't seem likely that you can
deal with stripping down a VCR to make it compact, or adapt a
computer card for use as a tuner.

that you are a want-a-be electronics whiz who hangs out on these news groups
flaming folks because you know absolutely nothing and hate yourself for it.
