Default Mitsubishi CS-3503R contrast problem

Hi folks,

Bought a used (no kidding) Mits. Product lable on the back says
"1987".

Picture contrast jumps back and forth between slightly too dark and
slightly too light. Unpredictable... no consisten pattern... it just
bounces light/dark/light whenever it feels like it. Sometimes a
complete movie can be viewed w/o symptom. Other times its back 'n
forth every few seconds.

What to do?

TIA

Tim

Sounds like the contrast control has a burned or corroded spot on it; set that
old most likely has manual controls for adjustments; will probably need to
replace the control, unless adjusting it either up or down (off the bad spot)
gets it to say put. Also could have bad solder connections on control. This
series of chassis also had problems with "goop" used to adhere wires and small
components in place on circuit boards; it would become corrosive/conductive
eventually, and must be removed/cleaned, and sometimes traces needed to be
repaired.

First thing that comes to mind is Macrovision on prerecorded video tapes or
dvd movies. Does the tv do this on regular over the air programming?

Second thing that comes to mind is bad solder connections on the ground to
the flyback.

Third is a failure in the abl line.

Fourth is the set is due to have a few capacitors replaced due to age.

Since that set is very complex. it is highly recommended you have someone
with experience on Mitz sets from that era do the work.

Forget about the post about the manual controls, that tv doesnt have them
for user picture settings.
