APC Smart-UPS does nothing after non-use
clifto wrote: Brian wrote: The UPS then worked normally! So yes, as the early responders answered, it was simply dead batteries. Will recycle the old ones, and keep the UPS plugged-in continuously so that hopefully these new batteries will last a long time. Keep an eye on that thing. DO google the SmartUPS 700 for experience stories. If the batteries ever significantly discharge (i.e. more than a few minutes off mains), I highly recommend you put new ones in rather than trust the used ones, based on my experience. Mine is off line and scheduled for destruction and recycling. I'd buy it. Nothing that a few mods can't correct. |

Call two or three and at least one will sell over the counter. Just got 'em (via eBay) -- "Rhino" brand; about US$16 each, including shipping. Look good, and hopefully will work well! Best retail price I saw, plus shipping, was about $32 each. I'll check next time. My last set was local and in between those prices. Good! There's only one batteries-only dealer here in town, and it is about a 15 mile round trip. So add ~$3 for gas ... Installed the new batteries yesterday. As warned, the lugs were smaller, so I had to crimp-down one connector slightly to get a tighter fit. Also, the last connection was shocking! Actually sparking -- one huge bolt, and I'm glad I wasn't in its way. There's a good-sized capacitor internally to the UPS, and my guess is that the batteries needed to recharge it upon connection. The UPS then worked normally! So yes, as the early responders answered, it was simply dead batteries. Will recycle the old ones, and keep the UPS plugged-in continuously so that hopefully these new batteries will last a long time. I just replaced the batteries in a non responding SMART UPS. What a stupid UPS. The batteies were for a 1500 watt unit, heavy. greg I don't think I'm quite following that ... What, that a smart ups can't say the battery is ka putt. greg Well my Smart-UPS 700 can tell me that the batteries are kaput. Third row of lights left to right. Bottom one is the "Battery Kaput" light ... In fact the diagnostic lights tell me a lot about what it's doing, so I wouldn't describe that particular model as "stupid". Arfa |

One is on my A/V equip in my living room and one in my office. I also have a Back-UPS ES 350 on my DSL modem, wireless router and Linksys NSU1 network storage unit bought around the same time. I've never had any problems with those units. The 1000's self test on their own at regular intervals and the 350 still runs for 45 minutes with the equivalent load of a PC with two hard drives minus a monitor. Trust me I've had my fair share of failed APC units but I have yet to figure out why some last for a year or so and others seem to last forever. If I had to guess I would say it's the quality of the batteries if the unit just sits there not being called upon for backup and suffers an untimely death. It may be that the store doesn't rotate stock, and the battery deteriorates before it's sold. I have about 20 that need new batteries, but they were all over five years old when pulled from service. They were all from a high volume user who buys directly from APC. -- http://improve-usenet.org/index.html Use any search engine other than Google till they stop polluting USENET with porn and junk commercial SPAM If you have broadband, your ISP may have a NNTP news server included in your account: http://www.usenettools.net/ISP.htm |

IME the difference is more to do with the battery (re-)charging and maintenance charging regime. Too often the manufacturer's arrangement is designed for maximum recovery rate (minimum recovery time) after a discharge, and they also tend to float them at a high terminal voltage. Almost without exception, every failed UPS I have checked had cooked SLA/VRLA batteries. That cooking came about at the hands of the charger, not the internal temperature of the unit. soapbox It is similar to the fate of Lithium-Ion laptop batteries. The appliance manufacturer's objective is maximised operating time, so they charge to 4v2. Charging to 4v1 would give something under 20% less usable capacity, but double the cycle life. The manufacturer would rather quote 3 hours endurance than 2.5 hours, so he configures the machine for maximised sales spec. The user picks up the tab later. /soapbox |

APC Smart-UPS does nothing after non-use

@linuxmaniac.nospam.net writes You might try to charge the batteries with a conventional charger or variable power supply for an hour or so at a low current then replace them in the unit. Its unlikely that it will work. It does; I've done it many times. An electronic charger, one that monitors the charging current, is needed, and if you have one that has a setting/switch for "Maintenance Free" (i.e. sealed) type, so much the better. You don't need to aim for a full charge; just enough to allow the UPS to initialise, then it will continue charging as required. -- (\__/) Bunny says NO to Windows Vista!
