It's like trying to pick out a conversation in an AIR-RAID SIREN
FACTORY!!!

Google should have some filter options so we can eliminate at least
some of these advertisements for fake Swiss watches, "Pleather"
suitases and other crap!

You just don't get it. Google is the source of all that crap, and the
longer it takes you to wade through the crap, the more money they get
for their paid advertising that is on every page you go to. If you want
to get rid of the crap dump Google groups and get an account on a real
news server.

Your IP address resolves to optonline.net. According to
http://www.usenettools.net/ISP.htm optonline.net has their own news
server, or a third party provider at news.optonline.net

All you need is any of the free news reader software, and to
configure the news server as news.optonline.net so you can use kill
filters, or a proxy server to do advanced filtering.

They will, when everyone killfilkes everything from google groups. I
am already flagging all the messages with News Proxy. All I have to do
is change the filter from flag to drop and I'll never see any of them
again. They are like the brain damaged idiots who try to convince you
that their WebTV is better than a computer.

If any of you know of a way other than Google Groups to access usenet
that doesn't require
NNTP access I'm all ears... I got an account at Motzarella.org, a free
news server mentioned
in an earlier thread, and have not been able to access their server.
I spent two evenings
going back and forth with their tech support guy, who was very
helpful, gave me alternate
ports to try, direct IP addresses to try via Telnet, pinging their
servers, nothing worked -
"Cannot Access Server". "Details" showed a Code of 800ccc0e in every
case. (using OE)
Finally gave up figuring the ports were being blocked by the firewall
on my end.
Tried Giganews tonight. Did'nt sign up for an account, but configured
OE to access their
server. I figured I should get a Login Failed if I tried to log in
without an account there,
but got the same Cannot Access Server error in OE. At this point I
wouldn't mind a
paid account, the rates are pretty reasonable, but I don't want to pay
for an account and
be unable to access their server. Any ideas?

Giganews is OK, but Supernews was better about filtering spam and
trolls before it was borged into Giganews. It dropped any message from
Google Groups that was cross posted to five or more newsgroups.

I see that you are posting from lmco.com, so they probably have port
119 blocked with their corporate nannyware. Microdyne did the same
thing when I worked there. Earthlink outsourced their usenet service to
Supernews last August. Giganews borged it last month.

I don't know who you use for a personal ISP, so it's hard to give you
advice. Supposedly I can access Giganews from any place on earth by
using my Earthlink login.

What did you download? Each one is different. They all are similar
to what follows:

I still like the old Netscape 4.78 mail and news reader software, AKA
Netscape Communicator, 4.78. It is easy to configure, threads well, and
you can archive messages into folders for future reference. Once you
install and open the program you select 'Edit', 'Preferences' and a new
window opens. You select 'News servers' and 'add'. Type in the name of
the news server and click ok. Then click on 'file' 'subscribe'. A
window will open for your email address from your ISP. Then another
will open for the password for that account.

The NNTP server will give you a list of all the available newsgroups,
in alphabetical order. You can scroll down through the thousands of
names, or use the search feature with 'electronics' to see any newsgroup
with that as part of it's name. Click on the ones you want to use, then
click on 'OK'. After that, all you have to do is select the group you
want to read from the list of groups you are subscribed to, and enjoy.
You can select view: messages: Unread to hide everything you've read.
You can create kill filters per newsgroup, or install Newsproxy to
filter the losers from every newsgroup you read.

I liked 4.78 too but had to migrate to 7.2 for browser features.
How did you get the filters to do useful work for newsgroups?
The filters in 7.2 only work on 'sender' (not a canonical field),
'subject' and 'date' headers and are essentially useless for
the current state of affairs.

Try clicking on this link: news:sci.electronics.repair to see if
outlook express will open and configure it for you. It worked with
netscape for me, years ago. that was how I found usenet. Someone
posted a hotlink to a newsgroup and my ISP used the news.***.*** format.
It opened and subscribed me to that newsgroup, and the rest is history.

You are paying YOUR ISP for service. Check with their tech support.

They may be blocking NNTP ports for some reason. Do you run a
router/firewall? It may be set up to block everything but outgoing port 80
and responses.

After installation browse to Goggle Groups (http://groups.google.com)
in Internet Explorer or Firefox (depending on which version of
TROLLKILLER you installed). The plug-in will load in the Windows task
bar for the Internet Explorer version once you search and are in an
actual group thread, i.e., search result. The Firefox version installs
in the bottom of the browser itself. It will activate once you're on a
thread.

In Internet Explorer you will double click on the Source Nine icon in
the Windows task bar to bring up the control window. In Firefox you
click the launch button on the bottom of your browser.

Once the control window is up you will see the tabs for the different
functions. The "Page" view shows all the users who have comments on
the thread you're viewing. You can select one or more names here and
click the "Block Selected User" to add them to the blocked list. You
can also manually enter a user name if for some reason it does not
appear in the list. "Users" shows currently blocked users and allows
you to unblock them if so desired. "Settings" contains a few general
features like disabling and enabling all blocking and place holder
