Default IR remote control coding query

Checking the coding function of the r/c, not something I do very often.
Manufacturer's original for controlling amp, tuner and CD but with 3
different receivers, one for each separate, from one IR controller.

The ident "pulse" code for all button presses, was always 101 then one bit
that alternated 0 or 1 on each successive keypress , whether the same key or
another one, then its inverse as a bit, then 011 then 18 bit function code
that was always consistent for the same button.
What was this alternating fourth/fifth bit all about? it was normal function
by the way

No numeric keypad on this R/C but presumably uses a GP chipset.
So avoids say keypresses 123 being misinterpreted as 1123 if the signal is
blocked while pressing the 1.
