Default Who Makes Sponge-Bob Squarepants TV sets for Emerson

I just picked up from a neighbors scrap pile a Sponge-Bob Squarepants
13 or 14" color TV set. On the back it says Emerson, model SB315.
Manufactured in Jan 2005, set seems to be dead as a doornail. I wonder
who actually makes the sets. Haven't had the back off of it yet.
Garish yellow plastic cabinet, but that could be spray-painted if I get
the set to work. Any info appreciated before I start to work on it.

No they didn't. Protron Televisions are built so well that shopnbc
recommends that you do not purchase a surge protector in lieu of an
extended warranty. Compare that to Circuit City, Best Buy who are
always trying to sell 5 year extended warranties on their Sony ****.

Look at all the posts in this newsgroup

500 posts a day about how Sony is such ****.

No posts whatsoever about Protrons breaking.

thats simple - they're disposable, as are most if not all shop brand,
supermarket and low end electronics, and people just toss them whereas
with a better quality product you're more likely to take the trouble to
repair it.

First - thanks to all the witty and knowledgeable folks who have
responded so far! Here is what I know at the present time, with the
back off the set, but not oscilloscoped yet.

On the back outside:
Manufactured Jan 2005, model SB315, suffix C, s/n 50115791SL,
distributed by Emerson Radio, 9 Entin Road, Parsippany, NJ 07054 (My
old stomping grounds when I worked in NJ 40 year ago), "Complies with
FCC Part 15 Rules", "21CFR 1040.10", made in China.

On the inside: The printed board is entirely in English, "Cainebo"
printed in one corner, picture tube label is "CHUNGHAWA", A34AGT13X36,
CPJ370BVBK1S-TC, Made in Malaysia.

The power cord is very unusual to my point of view, it looks almost
like scaled-down Romex house wiring rather than the "lamp cord" type of
power cord I am used to seeing.

Hope to get my scope out and start with the power supply and see what I
can find. If nothing else, I will be contacting Emerson in Parsippany
on Tuesday to see what help (haha) I can get from them on a schematic.

Happy New Year to all Posters and Lurkers!!

it would be useful to see what the b+ meansures as or even if it is
present.
have you removed the line transistor and connected across c-e a 60-100w
bulb ?
-B.

I haven't had a chance to dummy up the B+, I was hoping to get a look
at a schematic for a similarly sized set and see what they run for the
B+. The power supply appears to be a full-wave bridge, but it might
also be a voltage doubler. I haven't traced out the components of the
power supply, but the diodes are essentailly across the 120V line thru
a typical line filter. I am getting +150 volts across one power cap
and -150 V across a same-sized unit right next to the first cap, that
is why I want to check to see if there is a doubler. I sort of think
that would be very unusual, but I can't otherwise explain that I can
get 300V total when measuring across the two capacitors.

I'll keep posting what I find, I may rename the subject to "More on
Spongebob TV to keep it toward the top of the list.

I wouldn't waste my time waiting for a schematic if I were you.Tech
support for this disposable product is usually nonexistant. As the set
is dead, but some voltage is present in the power supply my experience
suggests that this is usually due to it being in protection mode, often
caused by a short in the horizontal stage. See what happens with the
HOT removed and post back.
-B.

That only works on Google. Real news servers do things right.
