Default Ancient VP-1000 laserdisc went boom

1981 Pioneer laserdisc. This thing has been working perfectly since I
got it years ago but last night it just went to static in the middle of
a movie. Now when push play the disc never budges, it just pauses and
the head moves a little and goes straight to eject/lid pops open. I
pulled the cover off and the fuses look ok and stuck a screwdriver in
the lid latch and the laser seems to be working just fine. Can see the
laser head move a little before it rejects with no disc in it. I
thought these had a belt in them somewhere but I guess not, looks like
the motor drives the spindle directly? Something tells me this thing
has played it's last movie. Any sugestions? thanks

Some poineer units had the problem of the lense in the laser head
falling out. If you know what you are doing, it is possible to epoxy it
back, if you can find it in the cabinet. This is critical to do.

Another failre is from dirt on the laser lens. Sometimes the power
supply and or the servo drive areas can give problems.

Take care to not invest too much in servicing a DVD player. They are
usually not cost effective to service.

The VP-1000 is not a DVD player, it's a vintage laserdisc player. You
can't buy one anymore so whether or not it's cost effective to repair
depends on how much one needs or desires to have it working.

I have one of the old Pioneer laser disk players that was used about 10
times before it got put up. Had a hard time finding disks for it
overseas. If you would be interested in it perhaps we could deal?

This model is well known to have laser unit problems. Not many out there
still working today. They're still in demand with arcade game collectors for
animated laserdisc games. You can buy a replacement laser from various
sources via the net for reasonable cost. Sometimes these players turn up for
$50 or so in good working shape at flea markets and video repair shops.

Hmmm, I have one that puts out those lines when you defeat the
interlock, but IIRC the lens never moves on this one. Wouldn't mind
getting rid of it cheap, at least it's a different symptom. I no longer
have any disks for it, but I just didn't want to throw it away.
