Hi

We have a Heat-N-Glo gas fireplace with rear/top direct vent. A few
minutes after shutting it off, there is a loud "boom" sound from behind
the wall on which the fireplace is installed.
We have not used the fireplace much since installation (about 1.75
years ago) but have noticed this boom sound before.

Is this normal contraction/expansion of the fireplace parts on shutff
off or is this something we need to get a professional to checkout.

I'd certainly get it checked out.

One harmless possibility is that the metal ductwork expands when it's
on and then wrinkles or settles perhaps back inward when it cools off.
I've seen hvac ductwork in places pretty far from the furnace, so i'm
guessing something that close to a fireplace could do it too.

But I would get it checked out to rule out anything goofy.

I second that. Sounds like expansion and contraction for the metal
ductwork to me too but having someone check it out is probably the
best advice.
