Air Canada was profitable before they bought over...dam, don't remember
their name. But it was canada's international flyer. They bought them
with
billions of debt...and never recovered from it.

Don't forget that, even with the debts, it gave AC a monopoly and
Milton and his fellow arseholes still couldn't make money. How do
losers like him keep their jobs? Wasn't he actually named the Financial
Post's Man-of-the-Year a while back? Now that's funny!

A good part of the reason for Canadian Airline's demise and Air Canada's
continuation is due to preferential treatment of route allotments to Air
Canada, as well as the Canadian government forgiving almost half a billion
dollars in Air Canada debt. In spite of Air Canada's whining about
profitability and market conditions, by far their biggest problem is simply
bad management.

Never happen, cause all the other airlines would be out as well. Besides
'mericans don't want to allow Canadian carriers flying from US city to US
city carrying passengers.

Most international carrier agreements are bilateral in nature. If US
carriers get access to certain routes in Canada, then Canadian carriers (if
there are any left) will have access to similar US routes.

Negotiated in the style of the softwood agreement? LOL

Like to know what routes were preferential treatment? AC had the east and
europe CAIL had the west including Asia, middle east and Oz.

What 1/2 billion forgiveness??

When new routes were awarded, Air Canada usually got the majority, the cream
of the crop, so to speak, and Canadian Airlines got what was left over. My
comments apply mostly to new routes resulting from the ongoing Canada-US
bilateral agreements. I remember one year Air Canada got 14 routes, Canadian
Airlines got two. There were also some international routes, where Air
Canada started flying into a few of Canadian Airline's more lucrative Asian
runs. What Air Canada wanted, usually Air Canada got.

Loans from the Canadian government to Air Canada.

AC's access to Asia was the long way round through Europe. CP got
access to Asia directly across the Pacific.

Yes, but in later years, if memory serves correct, Air Canada started flying
some pacific routes that were traditionally Canadian's territory.

The point I was trying to make is that Air Canada, which until recent years
was a government owned airline, almost always got preferential treatment. It
wasn't a level playing field between Air Canada and Canadian Airlines. CAIL
most certainly didn't receive, as the previous poster put it "billions and
billions in bail out money no other airline has". If anything, Air Canada
was the one that received billions in government handouts.
