Next, why don't you get some humble wood like pine to experiment with. BTW the router wont cut a straight line without a guide or two. Freehand routing is a whole other kettle of fish best left until you are more familiar with your router. BTW, my router is the next most valuable tool after my table saw. Take care and just be cool.
