Yellow or white glue also work, IIRC. I imagine shellac would,

But, otherwise too expensive. A bit of paraffin wax, warmed in
a can on a hotplate, or dissolved in paint thinner, is gonna leave
you with a reusable brush that doesn't need cleaning.

Would wrapping the pieces in plastic trash bags work?


Probably not well; you could get condensation in the bag, and
you don't want water contact. I've tried those plastic perforated
boxes that salad sometimes is sold in...
