Can a response by a group regular, by definition, even qualify as a
troll?. I responded to what he wrote, as he wrote it. He said that
what he wrote wasn't what he meant, but that I should have known what
he meant. To me, that certainly qualifies as communication skills that
need improvement.

I used to get all excited about this subject and would write post after
post about it. Then I realized that I was just encouraging them, Now I
scroll through the multiple pages of spam, and click on the woodworking
posts that interest me. I have noticed that the more posts I write in
answer to legimate posters, the more "harvesters" grab my addy and I get
more spam in my e-mail list. Such is life!

Technically, yes, but that wasn't how I read your post...

The wreck has been invaded a few times recently. The best thing to do
is update your filters (especially paying attention to any post that
goes to three or four groups (your choice) and anything that's
crossposted to a religion or pet newsgroup.

And, most important, don't EVER respond to a troll post, no matter how
much you want to rip a strip off the poster. Just say "bang, you're
dead" in you mind, and carry on.

dumb and criticise his communication skills while you were at it. That

crossposted to 3 or more newsgroups. I never see then unless someone
responds and removes all the other newsgroups.

No - you only see the replies that people make to the thread where they have
("helpfully") removed all the other groups involved in the cross post.

I've just d'/l'd and set up NewsProxy as described in the FAQ.

Works a treat. Would heartily recommend it.

But Sir Edgar I wasnt responding to the spamers and cross posters I was
responding to the NG. I was just making an observation. Don't remember this
much spam 6 months ago when I was last in here.

Unfortunately, a few months ago, a post that was innocently cross-
posted to several groups relative to a question that needed an immediate
answer was posted to a group that is inhabited by several world-class
sphincter orifice trolls. Initially those trolls brought some of their
foolishness into this newsgroup through their crossposting of their
mindless meanderings. In addition, they apparently cross-posted into
other infested newsgroups, including rec.ww in the distribution lists.
You are now seeing the trolling from trolls from those other newsgroups;
kind of a secondary and tertiary infection if you will.

Anyhow, in a nutshell that is why you are seeing so many off-topic
posts by non-rec.ww's in the newsgroup.

This too shall pass, just kill-file 'em and forget 'em.

It works a treat here, too. But it doesn't matter if the trolls know.
They *have* to cross-post so that everybody knows about what they're

A troll's intent is disruption of a newsgroup. If you respond to the troll
or just start a thread about what a PIA the troll is, he has still
accomplished that goal.

If you're talking about the dog poisoning (or something similarly
critical), I believe she only cross-posted to one of the dog groups,
which was completely appropriate (of course). Where all these
photography and other groups got tangled up with us is a mystery.

Two separate incidents. The dog groups are dangerous because of a well
known individual there. The photog groups were a slip/slide, almost
related.

In any event, filtering on posts cross-posted to multiple groups is an
effective way to deal with the trolls.

Cross-post, and you're plonked... I don't even know that you've posted.
Sure, I may miss the occassional pithy retort, but I'm willing to make
the sacrifice.
