You may remember I posted pictures of some maple I bought to make a chair
for my daughter and my new grandson. Well, here it is with two coats of Deft Oil finish. :-) |

The stripes on this chair is a real eye catcher. Ya did good son, ya did good! How much did this wood cost you? I can't really see the scale really well from the photos. How is it size wise? Is it a little short or a full size rocking chair? |

I built a mesquite chair like it in a class at Homestead Heritage. It is a Paul Sellers design. The 10/4 maple cost me $13 a board foot. I have about $900 in the chair. I ruined a couple of pieces that caused the price to go up:-( |

I ruined a couple of pieces that caused the price to go up:-( Not cheap, but you'd pay a lot of money to buy something of that quality and you'd not have the satisfaction of having made a family heirloom. Hopefully, your great grandchildren will enjoy it. Or at least enjoy watching it burn in the fireplace as it is just an old chair. Nice job. |

Really nice, Lowell.. Beautiful wood and beautiful craftsmanship. The
Deft Oil did a pretty good job of highlighting the grain all by itself..! By the way, if it makes you feel any better, I haven't seen any 10/4 locally but 8/4 is going for $16.50/b.f. here. $13/b.f. sounds like a bargain to me.. "Thanks for your kind words. The chair was a big challenge for me and I was project fatigued. It'll be good to work on something else, but would you believe I owe one to another of my offspring. I think I'll stay away from curly maple. It is difficult to work in a lot of respects. I think I'll do something in cherry, maybe craftsman style with ebonized tenons. i guess it's time to study Darrel Peart's book. :-) |
