Default more advise needed

Building a display case for a good friend for his knife collection.
Cedar he supplied. To be finished with clear poly. Anything special
I need to do to cedar before applying the poly?

Cedar can be a bunch of different woods. Who knows what you have?

Some cedar doesn't let some finishes cure particularly quickly.

Testing on scrap is always good advice. If there appears to be a problem
with the oil in the cedar letting the finish cure, try a coat of ultra
blond shellac as a sealer on the cedar. It will darken the cedar a bit and
add just a hint of yellow, but nothing you could not live with. Since
shellac is the universal bonding agent, the poly will have no problems
going on over the shellac.

Cedar, yeah I would guess it had better be sealed up.
I don't think he wants to keep them in a humidor.
Just my initial thought.
Does he like mahogany?
