Navy and moving to OK? Reminds me of the old story about the veteran
salt who was about to leave the sea and he was loading up his pack and
a couple of oars before starting on his trek to a new home. One of his
shipmates asked him why he had the oars and he replied, "I'm going to
walk inland until someone asks me what these are, and I figure that'll
be far enough from the sea for me to settle down."

Anything like that in your choice?

Have you posted your question to the forums on the AAW site?

Tips fer Turnin': Place a sign, easily seen as you switch on your lathe, warning you to remove any and all rings from your fingers. Called degloving, extended hardware can grab your ring and rip it off your finger. A pic for the strong of stomach: www.itim.nsw.gov.au/go/objectid/2A3AC703-1321-1C29-70B067DC88E16BFC/index.cfm

Besides, rings can easily mar the surface of a turning as you check for finished smoothness.
