I have tracked down the source of a significant leak in my 12 year old
Bosch dishwasher. There's a worn O ring on the water inlet side of
things. It's a fairly chunky O ring about 2 cms wide.

Bosch still sell these, but annoyingly they charge around £25 for a set
of 4.

I don't think it's possible to silicone the joint. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/? If they don't have one
in their shop you may find that if you ask a question on the relevant
forum you get suggestions - or someone* willing to sell you one for a
better price.


*it did occur to me I might be able to make a quick profit as a middle
man but the only one I found at first blush was for Smegs and might not
fit as you didn't give your precise model number.

Why don't you think siliconing is possible? Obviously the right sort of
ring is a better fix but for an "end of life" machine I would not rule
out a bodge.

Do an Internet search for a local bearing and seal supply company, ring
them with the measurement of the seal and see if they might be able to
match it. If they can, they will be just pence each.

Looks similar to the one I needed to replace on a Miele of similar age -
probably in a similar application where a solenoid valve connected to
the water softener mixer tank. Part was about 4 Euro from ebay, but I
was able to effect a temporary repair with some PTFE tape wound round
the shaft of the valve to make it a tighter fit:

You wanna look at the price of the spare combined pump and
water heater and you had better sit down before you do that.

I love my Bosch dishwasher but I dunno if I would ever buy one
new .I got mine for peanuts at a garage sale from some fool that
did a full kitchen reno and found it didnt match the new stuff.

I don't think its too bad, considering the age of it. Most manufacturers
only make a certain number of parts and ass the stocks go down, they either
have to make more, which costs due to small batch numbers, or restrict them
through price, in both cases the costs go up. For new belts for a tape deck
they went from 50p to five pounds in 10 years, as they perish so keeping old
stock was never an option as Sony told me, but they lasted well, so no
issues.

the O ring. I haven't worked out why the o ring shrank in the first
place. There are four of them, and only one has shrunk.

The bodge seems to be working, so I've put the machine back in place and
levelled it. I'll just see whether there is any water leaking in normal
use.

I've taken the opportunity to drill a 2mm hole in the sump. That'll let
small quantities of water drip out slowly but still stop it if there's a
significant flood.

Asking around various o ring stockists, this is a specialist size. So,
if I need one, I'll probably just have to pay the Bosch prices. There's
a guy offering a set on ebay for the knock down price of only £11.
