Default Fridge bulb, how to replace?

Er, can't see how to get this cover off to change the bulb! Getting ahold of it & pulling it every which way quite firmly doesn't budge it. Anyone know how this one works? It's a proline. Not run into this problem before with these type of light covers.

Dunno, but if you pull the knob off and undo the little screw, does the whole thermostat cover assembly come of as a oner?

Best to list the fridge model and see if someone has already
posted how to change that bulb. Very likely someone has.

The Proline manual says:

Changing the light bulb
Note. Light bulbs are not covered by the warranty
Disconnect the appliance from the mains supply.
Pull the lamp cover forwards, to gain accesses to the lamp .
Unscrew the light bulb in an anti-clockwise direction from the holder.
Replace the bulb with one of the correct type and size (10 watt E14 base).
Replace the cover by Pushing the cover Backwards.
Reconnect the appliance to the mains supply.

It's a good place for an LED equivalent - cooler when on and should last for
ever.
I did once realise that a lamp wasn't going off when the door was shut. I'd
reversed the door as it was /very/ inconvenient as supplied, then realised
that the compressor wasn't going off.
The lamp was just visibly on through the last miniscule crack before
closing. I had to bodge it as there was no more adjustment.
A 3W LED might not keep the compressor on all the while but it would affect
the running - domestic refrigeration is very feeble.

Your opening and closing sentences seem to contradict each other
entirely.

My fridge is designed for an ambient temperature and if the
temperature falls below that the compressor stops working. To deal
with that, in the winter there is a switch to leave the interior light
on permanently. This forces the compressor into use.

If you use a lamp that (in your words) 'might not keep the compressor
on' you could save a few pence on electricity while risking food
poisoning or destruction of the contents of the fridge. I know where
my priories lie.

It reminds me of a relative of mine who decided it was a good idea to
put rechargeable batteries into the smoke detector to save money. The
unit then started beeping unpredictably during the night.

Aren't there some fridges that use the heat from the lamp for
defrosting or somesuch?

I have replaced our fridge lamp with an LED and it seems to be ok.

If I knew the model I'd have looked it up. Getting the fridge out to look on the back would cause problems.

Possibly, this (for a different make) may help?:

Open freezer and reach to the back of the plastic cover over the light.
You'll feel a gap in the back center of the cover. Gently pull forward
and the cover will drop down and pull to the back to fully remove it.

I don't think so. The instructions talk about unscrewing the bulb
anticlockwise, so they are looking at the holder from inside the
fridge. The cover looks as if it has to slide away from the housing,
i.e. "forwards" away from the door like you unscrew the bulb
"forwards". Perhaps other models have the housing reversed so the bulb
is towards the door, and they never changed the instructions to suit.

Yes, LED is OK in a fridge; in an oven it would fail on first heating unless
the design kept the lamp a long way from the heat; in a microwave oven - I
don't know, possibly the radiation/interference could bork it.

My fridge/freezer doesn't defrost or use the lamp for cold ambient but it
does have a skin heater to prevent condensation and that might be enough to
keep it going - depends on the wattage and how much heat would flow the
'wrong' way.

The one that I mentioned was in warm weather, so the extra load was too
much.

I read it the other way -- pull it away at perpendicular to fridge panel it's
mounted on.

However sliding sounds much more likely. Perhaps there's a clip or catch.

I think it just clips off.

There seems to be a little tab at the bottom of the cover, almost
covered in the photo by your pot of takeaway sauce. Put some implement
behind that like a knife blade, and pull forward from the fridge wall.

That turned out to be the solution. Thanks everyone.
