Default Smart Meter firmware update

I'm just in the process of switching suppliers, so whilst on the phone
to them, I asked about my SM's and would they need to be swapped out
yet again. E.On said they are not swapping them now, they will get a
compatibility update next March, which should sort them for all
suppliers.

I rang they yesterday (following up my post on Smart Meters here
recently) on behalf of my Mum and said 'no thanks for now'.

They said they were supposed to ask 'why' and I said about the
'inflexibility to change suppliers' etc.

They also said the same thing as they did to you but additionally they
were currently field trialling 1000 of the 2nd gen SM's and *also*,
the 1st Gen could be upgraded with an OTA upgrade to be the same (as a
2nd Gen)(functionally presumably).

She said she would take us (Mum) off the list till the 2nd Gens were
being rolled out.

Though something I listened to on the radio said some of the 1st
gen ones were not going to be upgradable.

So I'll guess we will see

Chris French presented the following explanation :
Though something I listened to on the radio said some of the 1st

Which I have also heard too. Present meters, now the third set, have
all been the identical looking 'Secure' units..

My guess was that they had to swap them with each supplier change, so
they could be program for each supplier.

I was skeptical when she said that.

So I'll guess we will see

Quite ... but I'd still rather wait for whatever is required that
would be interchangeable between suppliers (I wouldn't want that to be
another stumbling block re switching).

Default Smart Meter firmware update

I'd also like to know if anyone here has asked for the talking remote bit.
The watchdog says they should be on the shelves last year but nobody I've
spoken to seems to know they exist. There is no point in me getting one if
somebody install has to read my meter, after all, and they agree. Of course
they can read it but I need to be able to see the reading before the bill.

Why is life so damned difficult simply when your sight goes. We are an
inventive species, nearly every telephone of the mobile sort known as smart
now speaks, but simple things like meters and tv set top boxes do not.
I once asked a person about the cost in hardware, less than five quid.

Well yes, one of the reasons I haven't got a SM yet is I've been
waiting for them to sort it all out

They all allow you to see the reading using the app on the phone etc.

Why is life so damned difficult simply when your sight goes.

It isnt in this case, because they know that you
blindys can use the app on the phone etc.

Any decent phone can do it by voice and speak the result too.

Because with meters it makes more sense to use the phone app
to tell you the reading rather than have the meter itself do that.

I once asked a person about the cost in hardware, less than five quid.

Its zero when it’s the app in your phone.

Our new TV, has an 'AD' button, that on some programs gives an audio
description of the scene being shown. Pay a few extra pounds and I can
get a remote which has a built in mic, which if I understand it -
allows you to tell the TV what to do, rather than press the buttons.
