It's an elderly FreeView tuner. Have a few used only for radio.
One has failed. The TOP 244Y chip has blown apart. Think it is basically
just the on/off switch on the DC side. Nothing else looks damaged. Worth a
punt just replacing it?

That's a mains voltage SM chip, there's a data sheet with suggested
circuits. If it's blown itself apart it would seem a good idea to check
the mains reservoir cap along with both the diodes hanging off the Drain
pin.

Seems like it's the switching PSU chip:

Depends how much you like debugging SMPSUs (given it may have blown
something else as well).

Likely given the best price is so low.

However as has been said check the rest of the components in the circuit.
These things seldom self destruct without good reason like a short or some
kind of change to its input.

I hate switch mode devices with a passion.

I prefer them but don’t usually bother to repair
them unless its something very simple like the
input bridge etc and it hardly ever is.

They're so cheap now that its not worth my time.

I wouldn’t bother myself given how fiddly that is to do with SMPSs
given that the ones that are easy to check wont produce that symptom.

Sure, but its not that easy to check the stuff that can kill that thing.
It’s almost the entire active semis in the power supply and it isnt
that likely that a failure of whats downstream of it will kill it like
that or that easy to replace if it has either.
