I've got an old pop-rivet gun which worked perfectly well the last
time I used it, maybe 1978. Bought a selection of rivets the other day and there is no grip. So has the pin diameter changed with metrication? Or is my gun broken? -- AnthonyL |

There are several sizes of pop rivet - with different shank diameters. The better guns have several nozzles, allowing you to fit the appropriate one for the rivets. -- Cheers, Roger ____________ Please reply to Newsgroup. Well a combination of factors but a good spray of WD40 followed by some graphite oil once dried and lots of vigorous opening an closing, plus shoving a panel pin into the slightly corroded nozzle and after managing to get a couple of rivets in the whole gun started to smooth up nicely - job done. Thanks to all who made sensible suggestions. -- AnthonyL |

They do have a connection with gripping, look at the taper on the end of the nozzle it is in a different place for each one,the taper acts on the gripping jaws |

But on mine the gripper mechanism is the same for all sizes - you just change the nozzle. I'd check the gripper hasn't seized. -- *I have plenty of talent and vision. I just don't care. So has the pin diameter changed with metrication? Nope, the one I built the house with in the very early 70s still works fine with new rivets. Or is my gun broken? Yep. |

Well the last time it was used was in Perth, WA so maybe it's an antipodean thing. Or I'll go for something seized/sticking. Or splash the cash and buy a replacement. Well the last time it was used was in Perth, WA so maybe it's an antipodean thing. Nope, most of our pop rivet guns and rivets are imported. Or I'll go for something seized/sticking. I did initially thing that, but then I realised that pulling the handle should have enough force to close the jaws on the rivet nail. More likely what used to move the jaws closed when you squeezer the handles has broken so that squeezing the handles no longer moves the jaws IMO. Or splash the cash and buy a replacement. Yeah, they arent expensive. I've added some more from garage sales just so I don’t have to hunt up the original one when I need to pop some more rivets. In emergency can pliers/mole-grips work? No, you need a lot of force to pop the rivet. |

No one ever takes much notice of me,if you have the wrong nozzle in, the taper on the inside end may be holding the gripper jaws apart long enough to slip, although the taper's prime purpose is to make it let go,look closely at the design. |

They grip a wide range of sizes when working. |
