Thanks andy, know anywhere in the north ?

They'll ship it.

For orders under £150 cost is £5.

You might want to cost your shopping list on their site, they are
usually competitive.

Alternatively, if you want to visit a trade counter, try WF
Electrical. They will normally do a deal and have branches over
most of the country. The will cut lengths of SWA as well and will
deliver within reason.

WF and TLC have own brand stuff which is quite similar. WF's Alto
range for lights etc. is pretty good.

While I think of it, if you are putting fluorescents in a garage,
you might want to consider electronic ballasted ones. They cost a
bit more but work well in cold weather and don't flicker.

Thanks for the information.

Can I get those from Screwfix Andy?

Phil

I haven't seen them there.

Again, TLC have them, as do WF and any other trade supplier, although
they may have to order them in - normally 2-3 days.

Here's an example.

You can get fittings without covers with the electronic ballasts and
you can also buy the ballasts separately to put in a standard fitting,
but it's generally cheaper to buy them in the fitting.

Think I'll stick with the cheapies for now...interesting to know they are
out there though, they look the business!

Well its kind of a temporary arrangement as I plan to use the back

Thats the plan anyway... more of a play pen than a workshop

That's the best use for the back half of a garage as far as I can see!
I'm thinking of putting my pool table in the lounge, the garage is
full!

Was thinking if I couldn't get hold of a proper hood that i could use an oil
barrel cleaned out split in half and sprayed silver inside, black outside,
and mount some lights inside it.

Its a theory anyway, and an amusing project even if it doesnt work out

I'd knock something up out of ply\mdf\chipboard. Probably look more
like the proper one. Probably cost a bit more than an old oil drum
though, but you can't put a price on authenticity!

www.drinkstuff.co.uk might have some suitable adornments to the decor.

1mm twin and earth and 3 core and earth for the two way and lighting
circuit
?

Well I guess, but that means two lots of cable when a reel of one
type is sooooo cheap. Any benefit to using 1mm?

You will find out in trying to wire the lighting in 2.5mm, that you
can only get one 2.5mm core into each lighting circuit terminal.

Thanks for that, I'll definately be using the 1mm stuff now

Phil

Don't forget the 3 core and E for the two way switching.

Really? I don't know how many I would need for it to be well lit.
It will be a 29 x 9 foot garage

That's a similar size to my workshop where I have about 600W (tube watts) of
triphosphor fluorescents (colour 840). With a ceiling height of about 2.8m
(walls & ceiling painted white) the illumination is over 1000 lux at bench
height. Each of the 5 luminaires is separately switched to allow the
lighting to be varied to taste.
