Dont believe it. If it was that good it would be splashed across all the
major media.

It has been covered by ABC in Oz and the Independent in the UK, but is
mostly being reported in specialist magazines.

It seems to still be at the experimental stage. It will be much bigger
news if they get it into commercial production.

But not in ABC News.

Catalyst always gives anything like that a run.

And if it really was viable it would past that by now.

It will be much bigger news if they get it into commercial production.

If it was viable, it would have exploded onto the media spectacularly.

Its meaningless. Plants + yeasts will turn CO2 into ethanol. This is an
energy inefficient way to do it in a lab.

To be fair to the authors they noted this in the conclusion in the
original paper:
"The overpotential (which might be lowered with the proper electrolyte,
and by separating the hydrogen production to another catalyst) probably
precludes economic viability for this catalyst, but the high selectivity
for a 12-electron reaction suggests that nanostructured surfaces with
multiple reactive sites in close proximity can yield novel reaction
mechanisms."

But plants turning CO2 into ethanol is a vastly less time-efficient way
than the authors are proposing. It's probably a lot less
energy-efficient, too.

But it is a lot more convenient. :-)
