It's not much more than a collage of bits chopped out of magazines, but
to me, who grew up in the early 70's and had lots of legacy 60's items
lying around, it evokes memories because it has so many triggers.

If someone did the same thing now out of current magazines, I'd probably
just think "bah".

Well exactly.

The point is that for art like that to be a trigger into a new
perception it has to have artfully arranged content that is meaningful
in a particular way to a particular target audience.

Native S American art featuring stylised and fairly hallucinogenic
snakes and jaguars probably is such to a remote forest tribe who indulge
in yagé intoxication but to us it just looks - well - odd?
