Oddly enough Tracy's unmade bed brought back memories of squats and low rent shared houses I have known, and brought a smile to my face. As a symbol of a certain sort of lifestyle, I reckoned it made its point, and that's probably what I would call 'art'...a symbol for a larger idea. Perhaps that is it. This iconic bit of pop art: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_w...o_appealing%3F will probably be familiar to everyone, if not by name. It's not much more than a collage of bits chopped out of magazines, but to me, who grew up in the early 70's and had lots of legacy 60's items lying around, it evokes memories because it has so many triggers. If someone did the same thing now out of current magazines, I'd probably just think "bah". |

If someone did the same thing now out of current magazines, I'd probably just think "bah". Well exactly. The point is that for art like that to be a trigger into a new perception it has to have artfully arranged content that is meaningful in a particular way to a particular target audience. Native S American art featuring stylised and fairly hallucinogenic snakes and jaguars probably is such to a remote forest tribe who indulge in yagé intoxication but to us it just looks - well - odd? http://www.lycaeum.org/diseyes/fresh/yag1.jpg -- New Socialism consists essentially in being seen to have your heart in the right place whilst your head is in the clouds and your hand is in someone else's pocket. |
