Just why do the BBC go in for these live outside broadcasts, especially from No 10 at night when there's nobody else around? Do staff use it as a way to get some more remuneration such as travel allowance, grub paid for? If so I could see that it might be opportunity taken whenever possible. But it does seem a waste of time on many occasions. On the South Coast we had the Hoegh Osaka vehicle carrier ship incident back in January, cue Sally Taylor to leave the studio and stand on a windswept waterside pointing into background so dark that it was impossible to tell if was Southampton Water or the Yorkshire Moors and basically tell the viewer that "the ship is listing out there ". She could have done that from the studio . Surely someone had the nouse to realise that it is dark outside at 18.30 in January and utterly pointless to aim the camera at a few lights a mile or two distant in the murk. Also regional weather presenters doing the report from some location such as a seaside , private garden, music festival ,sports event etc. No value can be added to the forecast, it isn't going to stop raining because the presenter wants to spend a nice evening out. Presumably there is an extra cost to this, mileage allowance to be paid for the presenter and an assistant to hold the camera, would they get a meal allowance? G.Harman |
