By the sound of it, it's more of an underground garage than a secret
cellar since the locals knew about it and he'd had it out before.

Interesting demonstration of modern paranoia; an old man who has kept a
tank in the same vein as people keeping traction engines and old cars,
is treated as if he's going to be going on another Killdozer attack.

Bit more to it than that, by the sound of it.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Kiel are investigating whether the
man's military collection violates Germany's War Weapons Control Act.
But his lawyer says the weapons are no longer functional, therefore
shouldn't be restricted.
Local prosecutors were tipped off about the cellar's contents by
colleagues in Berlin, who searched the home for stolen Nazi art earlier
this year.

It does rather depend on whether he had any significant munitions, which
curiously is not mentioned. In the UK there is an immediate mention of
the bomb squad if there is thought to be any possibility of explosives.

A lot of continental homes still have big cellars - cheap source of cool
air in summer and a good place to store wine & beer.

How they got it out again is probably a good clue to how it went in.

The munitions collector from St. Albans is currently being prosecuted.
Not sure of the grounds. Perhaps illegal metal detecting:-)

It did mention a torpedo. Plenty of HE in one of those.

Only if its still got it in it and isn't a practice torpedo.

Except that you don't need a licence to collect traction engines, but
you do need one in Germany if you want to collect weapons of war,
whether deactivated or not.

That's Germany for you.

In Britain the government is selling off bits of the military and the BBC on ramco.

Multi-level underground carpark, by the final seconds of the video* on
Der Tagesspiegel website. He also had a great big flak cannon and some
torpedos, but no u-boat was mentioned...

Probably an old friend. Drove it halfway to Moscow seventy years ago.
Typical of the EUSSR mentality that they've taken it from him.

A garage owner has a Russian tank parked on the forecourt just up the road from me.

Nothing to do with the EUSSR, that's just the krauts being terminally
stupid.

It was Britain and our Allies who banned Germans from owning tanks, both
in 1919 and in 1946.

I wonder why...?

Obviously, the small detail that if it WAS an "EUSSR" rule, then it'd
apply equally across all EU members - including the UK - escapes Harry.
