Mrs Pounder Esquire has been smoking snouts for 53 years.
Three months ago she got one of those e-fag things. After two weeks she
stopped smoking it, she no longer needs a snout and would not bull**** me.
She gave the e-fag to me.
I have been a very heavy smoker for 45 years, and I LIKED it.
I've not had a snout for six weeks and do not want one. There is a pack of
unopened snouts in the house.
Shirley this must be worth a try?

Did the e-fag just make you realise how pointless it all was?

My Mum smoked 20-40 a day from the age of 14 till she was 60, when she
simply said that she couldn't afford it now she'd retired. No
recidivism, no apparent craving. Maybe like her, you were never really
addicted, it was just habit and perhaps a little belligerence.

Mind you, she still died of lung cancer, which was very nasty.

Cheers

Don't under estimate the chemical addictiveness of nicotine.

I smoked for a few years (bad habit picked up in the JobCentre -
everyone smoked inside and out).

Anyway, gave it up for nicotine nose spray (potent hit that sh*t) then
later those little tabs you stick by your gums (not gum, gum is weak).

Then couldn't give that up - used to get very tired, grouchy and the rest.

Anyway, had my hernia op and they said "no food, limited water and no
sucking anything, not even those nicotine thingies - and no coffee".

Needless to say I had a massive headache by the time I saw the
anaesthetist but she fixed that by running the analgesic in before the
knockout juice.

I made a conscious decision that as I was going to feel ****e anyway, I
might as well do the cold turkey and that worked.

Indeed. I gave up the cigs (roll ups) in 2008 and I'm still on lozenges.
Not many - I get through a couple of 2mg a day, broken into 4. So
probably not that high a dose, and the stuff the nicotine is suspended
in is probably more harmful ;-)

My father used to smoke 60 a day before deciding he could do better
things with the money. He used Nicobrevin, since withdrawn as
ineffective except for having a placebo effect, for a month and gave up
entirely.

Cigarettes.

Because you were unable to work out for yourself
that going on e-cigs would save money regardless
of the effect on a person's health - some people are
probably genetically immune to the most harmful affects
of smoking only nobody can work out who - I assumed you
must think that they don't cost anything. So that you
yourself, or any smokers that you know must be
stealing their cigarettes.

Rubbish. The risk of lung cancer will never be reduced to that of a
non-smoker, but the risk of stroke will within 2-5 years, as will,
eventually, the risk of coronary heart disease.

If you smoke and want to give up then anything is worth a try.

Presumably if there's no tar or any other harmful by-products
then they must be an improvement.

The range of flavours seems a bit confusing though.
"A wide variety of flavours are available, including cherry,
vanilla, strawberry, chocolate & blueberry etc"
I've seen a kiosk in a shopping centre with bottles
containing maybe hundreds of flavours.

I gave up 30 years ago and never miss Virginia, from
smelling it in other people's smoke. But I used to smoke
a lot of Turkish, Abdullahs, Balkan Sobranies,
and cheapies made by a small London firm called Morris.
Nothing to do with William Morris. Now all forgotten.
Except the Sobranie brand name on upmarket Virginia.
If they ever came out with a really authentic Turkish -
flavour - then I'd certainly be tempted to take it up
again.

There is, but they still cause a degree of irritation to the throat, etc.
Too soon to know about long term effects. But hopefully less harmful than
smoking tobacco.

Although I smoked ordinary fags (Silk Cut) I've settled on menthol to
vape. Not tried every flavour though. Just none at first then tobacco
flavour. Pal was using menthol and I liked it, so have stuck to that.

I bought one on Sunday. It's cut down my fag smoking by 75% and saved me
a fortune. Don't intend to give up the fags cos I enjoy them, but I
already feel better due to the lower levels of tar etc.

I bought one of the slightly up market ones, to half heartedly give it
a go, never having even tried to stop in 50 years. I dual fueled for a
few weeks, down to maybe 20% of my usual consumption. The vaping then
just took over completely, no will power no effort - it just took over
as being much cheaper and more pleasant generally.

Not had a ciggy in 10 months now and consuming 3p's worth of liquid per
day.

I stopped smoking fags immediately after getting the vaping device. But
it's not just a cheap electronic fag. I still have a couple of new packs
of fags in a drawer. ;-)

Ah - that's pretty moderate use. I spend about £20 a month on liquid.

The Other Half works for the NHS in a geriatric ward - admission to the
ward is generally only for those 75 or older.

According to her they almost never have smokers on the ward... Latest
statistics is that 6 out of 10 of those don't even make it to retirement
age.

I gave up the roll-ups 5 years ago because it was becoming just such a
faff standing in doorways in the rain like some bloody vagrant.
Can't grip a pint glass without craving a fag though, so pretty much
stopped doing that too. Can't say I feel any better for it.
Non-smokers don't live longer, it just seems that way (Ronnie Scott joke

as easy as falling of a log. I swapped my 30/40 a day, to the
equivalent of around 10 vaped per day. From that I deduced that rather
than being adicted, it was nothing more than a smoking habit. It was my
first attempt to give up in 50 years of smoking.

Since then, I have persueded another 10 to give it a go and all arrived
at the same conclusion - it was an habit, nothing more. I also advised
the use of something a bit more upmarked than the petrol stations and
supermarkets sell.

My vaping habit now costs me around 3p per day. I also derive much more
enjoyment from it, than I ever did from smoking.

I've always been pretty fit and healthy, no issues at all and I have
not noticed any difference since giving up. What I have noticed is that
minor scrapes and long standing minor problems clear up and clear up
now faster - which is suggested to be a result of the increased oxygen
in the blood.

A really bad heel blister repaired itself in 3 days last week. A
prominent large age spot I have had for many years and becoming more
prominent on my forehead, suddenly disappeared in the past month.
Patches of long standing rough skin, cleare up in the past month.

So stopping has certainly been noticed by my body.

I've been using a 'vape' device for about 3 years now. Still addicted to
nicotine - but saving a fortune over fags.

Have you ever posted anything constructive or interesting here, or in your
silly back biting uk.radio.amateur group?
All you have ever done here is ask silly questions and make dumb comments.
I do seem to remember that in your "poverty laptop" thread you described
this group as good for trolling - or words to that effect.
You seem to be a bit of a dickhead.

I'm not a prolific poster here, but I have:
Asked valid questions.
Rightly or wrongly offered solutions.
Posted OT perhaps, but that was for a spot of fun.
All that you have ever done is to ask silly trolling questions.

Well done, sir!

And the Welsh are going to discourage their use by banning them in
public places, on the grounds that they encourage young people to take
up smoking. How stupid is that!

Have seem all the flavoured vaping stuff? There is no way that is aimed at
smokers trying to give up, it's all about getting kids addicted.

Yeah right.
From 40 per day to zero per is one hell of a failure.

It's fine for those genuinely trying to stop but has it cured your nicotine
addiction? Just look at the flavours and packaging of the stuff on sale now
and tell me you think that they're not trying to hook kids in.

But the fact that you can get these things with varying grades of nicotine,
including none at, all opens up all sorts of possibilities.

The assumption seems to be that people only ever smoked
at all before, because they were addicted to nicotine. But if that
were the case then presumably everyone would be happy smoking
just any old rubbish - as admittedlt some of the king size virginia
filters undoubtedly were/are. To some people at least.

But maybe some people just like smoking for the sensation
of breathing in flavoured smoke.

But because nicotine has always been present in tobacco
its been impossible, up to now, to isolate the two components.

Maybe breathing in nicotine free strawberry or chocolate flavoured
vapour may be a pleasurable experience in itself.

Which isn't to say that it isn't an advantage to be selling something
which contains an addictive substance like nicotine to anyone.

However if that were the only motivation, then with so many
players in the market, and with relatively low start up costs,
none of them could be sure that in fanning that addiction
they weren't simply increasing the market for their
competitors. And so to maintain market share all the players
would either need to engage in price cutting, or as in the case
of illegal drugs resort to shootouts in the streets.

Also calorie-free?

I wonder if the same approach would work with fat people.

Might be best to read the researched statistics on kids taking up
vaping, or even adults, before spouting such rubbish.

Vaping is even less attractive than smoking ever was to kids.

'Vaping' can simply replace the way the body gets the nicotine hit. Same
as patches or pills. You can get different strengths of liquid - and
devices which deliver a different level of nicotine per puff. If you do
want to stop more easily, you'd gradually reduce the dose. As you'd do
with patches. Same as trying to control drinking, but perhaps more
successful.

Just look at the flavours and packaging of the stuff

in.

But you can buy nicotine free flavours.
