Default AA breakdown renewal time

As per usual I had to call them to drop the price.

£136 down to £99. Not bad for a two minute phone call.

And I get to keep the Gold Star membership card.

Pretty much exactly the same reduction for me too, Adam.
Well worth the call.

They are offering 75% off if I join (IIRC the top package for family is
£57).

I haven't needed any breakdown help in the last 15 years on over 500,000
miles so its not good value IME.

PS what do they do if you don't have a spare like so many cars these
days, they used to exclude help if you didn't have a serviceable spare?

They exclude help, if you don't have a servicable spare "where standard
equipment includes one".

But, of course, two seconds reading the Ts & Cs on their website would
have told you that.

So on a car where its an optional extra does it exclude help?
I recently looked at new cars and some had had spares and some had
inflation kits and they were the same models.

Breakdown cover (I'm not sure how it compares with the AA) for £39 at
www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/

Used them for years and have had a couple of claims that were handled
without any issues.

Ditto, but then who wants to be sat on the hard shoulder of the M6 in
the ****ing rain trying to arrange recovery. After all, AFAIAC, the cost
of RAC (or whatever) membership is in the noise.

AIUI you can join on the spot and make an immediate call if you pay some
penalty.

One of SWMBO's cars stopped twice. Once I recover it, and once I fixed
it near where it (was) stopped. So far my PAYG approach has saved me
money.

They want direct debit payments solely so they can overcharge you.
The majority will let it pass.

Since when did optional mean standard? If it bothered you, you could
always ask tem.

I recently looked at new cars and some had had spares and some had
inflation kits and they were the same models.

Seems uncommon though, if a car nowadays doesn't have a spare, then
there does seem the space left either for one. Like our Galaxy - where I
assume they used the space for th fold flat rear seats

That would be fine if they did always come out quickly and sort the
problem in the best and quickest way. But this just isn't the case.

Last time I used the AA, the water pump had exploded on the M1 about 10
miles north of London - I was returning home to South London. At about mid
day.

AA took 2 1/2 hours to arrive - despite being stopped on the hard shoulder
in a less than ideal place. Then had to send for a recovery truck - even
after being told on the phone the car couldn't be driven due to no coolant
at the outset.

The tow truck took us the 'wrong' way to a garage in Watford. Who didn't
have a pump - obviously. So another tow truck was called who eventually
got us home by 8 in the evening.

It just means they won't put a spare on if it's not road-legal (bald, damaged, etc).

Many people are surprised to be told that at stupid O'clock on a dark, wet road.
