12V power supply female tips
Following on from my initial search for a power supply I need to be sure I
get the correct tip size. I have found a power supply in the house which fits - 60mA power supply for a radio - and when plugged in and the amp turned on the light comes on :-) I am assuming that a 60mA power supply wouldn't be expected to do any more with a demand from the amplifier of 2A - 5A depending on which information I believe. Using my digital calipers the outside diameter of the plug seems to be between 5.5mm and 5.7mm and the internal diameter (female plug) about 2mm. Diameter of the male part in the back of the amp is about 6mm - but I note that there is a spring clip so possibly a slightly smaller external diameter would also work. Internal diameter of the female plug seems to be about 2mm. Depending on the effort I expend the caliper reads between 2.0 and 2.08mm. I can't get the calipers on the pin inside the socket of the male side. All in all, taking the rough with the smooth, and with a following wind, something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-12-VOL...item4167968c97 which quotes the female pin as "Output Plug : Female 2.1 x 5.5mm" might well do the job. However, given the random nature of the female plugs I am wondering how much leeway there is in plug sizes. Perhaps if there is a spring in the socket pushing on the outside of the female plug then if the internal diameter is slightly over size then there will still be a firm contact on one side. So the usual uncertainty. The upside is that the 2.5/5.5 size seems common for LCD TV power supplies of which there are many. So as usual, advice and reassurance most welcome.
