I opened a chat session with a customer service agent on their website
and sent a reasonably polite message saying that they've just really
annoyed several thousand potential customers by spamming a newsgroup.

I had to log off before I got a reply, though. I wonder if enough people
do that, they'll get the hint. You don't need an e-mail address to open
the session, by the way.

The weird thing about the messages is that they are part advert part attempt
at commentary on the Olympics, and not in any kind of grammar I've seen.
Did the office drunk have some spare time over lunch?

Of course on this server whose days are numbered now, it did come through,
but not on Eternal September. I may have to go over o the latter as I'm
seeing long delays on my messages getting out of here just now.

As has been said by at least one other poster, it seems like an attempt
by the marketing department to get more hits on their website, possibly
via a Google Groups throwaway account.

Possiby, as you say, after a good, alcoholic lunch. It's not the first
such surfeit of Spam I've seen in the last year or so, usually from some
Chinese source.

The title on this thread does make me smile, though. How many different
occasions are there for wearing a wedding dress? And how exactly would
one wield an angle grinder whilst wearing one?

Look. You have a shonky website. You are professional scamster. You
have conned some **** into a contract that the more hits you get the
more income you will get.

The quickest way to get hits is to announce your website under some
arbitrary title that you hope will be of superficial interest to someone.

That way its 'in google' and google will bot it and index it. That's
several hits already. In addition if enough idiots click on it even
once, you can present our paying customers links and drivel and they get
hit referrals from your site, which they will pay you for.

The mistake is in thinking that this person actually wants to sell yopu
anything at all. They just want site exposure, and/or they have some
nasty bit of malware lurking behind anything you might click on and
download.

To people who know nothing, anything is possible.
To people who know too much, it is a sad fact
that they know how little is really possible -
and how hard it is to achieve it.
