Self-leveling over SBR.ed concrete?
I've just poured a lot of diluted SBR over the concrete in the office floor
as it was clearly not put down right and patches were breaking up [1]. |

Self-leveling over SBR.ed concrete?

... I've just poured a lot of diluted SBR over the concrete in the office floor as it was clearly not put down right and patches were breaking up [1]. Curse you Microsoft - managed to send too early! Now where was I? Right, done the SBR, filling some small holes tonight, but whilst working on the floor it was clear that every expense had been spared when levelling it. It's not terrible but it's clear why the carpet was suffering in places. So, self-levelling compound all over? But will it bond to the SBR? Should I give the floor a quick "paint" with some SBR beforehand or should I add SBR to the levelling compound to help it bond? If you've done this before, and it worked, all suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Paul DS [1] For anyone doing this, the NG recommended a 1:1 SBR/water mix. I poured almost 5+5litres over 6m2 of floor - in some places it pooled immediately but in others the "concrete" seemed more like "sponge bob square pants" requiring me to pour, and pour, and pour again. So my tip is buy a lot more SBR than you think and return any unopened containers which you don't use. |

Yes - I've done exactly that. Soaked a load of soft crap screed with several gallons of ditute 1:1 SBR, then SBR modified screed patches for the bits I had to cut out (no longer attached to concrete below). Then levelling compound over the top. No - I did not re-SBR it prior to applying (couple of weeks later IIRC) and the compound stuck fast IME. I would not add SBR to the compound as you don't know its chemical makeup and it may bugger the properties. But I don't see it would do any harm to paint dilute SBR down 30 mins before pouring and apply compound as soon as it's just dry (ie no white puddles). Thanks, Paul DS [1] For anyone doing this, the NG recommended a 1:1 SBR/water mix. I [poured almost 5+5litres over 6m2 of floor - in some places it pooled immediately but in others the "concrete" seemed more like "sponge bob square pants" requiring me to pour, and pour, and pour again. Mine did that. Brown screed that seemed to be 95% plaster's sand and 5% "misc". So my tip is buy a lot more SBR than you think and return any unopened containers which you don't use. I bought a 25l mega bottle on the internet for £75 - very well worth it: http://www.permagard.co.uk/sbr-bonding- additive.html?gclid=CLqinISV_KwCFcwMtAodPV48Rw BTW - what compound are you using, because if you've not bought it, I totally recommend F Ball's Stopgap 300 (and you'll need a bottle of the green neoprene primer). But my daughter is currently learning how to swear - sorry I mean use one of those pesky pads. I get on alright with them but my daughter tends to rest her hand on the buttons whilst using it so the pad then does unexpected things. Paul DS. |
