Polyurethane or Danish oil for front door?
Which of these is the best finish for an old wooden front door,
after light sanding? Or maybe teak oil? (Is there any real difference between teak oil and Danish oil?) -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College Dublin |

Varnish doesn't work well with oak for example. Danish oil has driers in it so will be better than teak oil. Jonathan |

It is the original door, 160 years old, and is very large and heavy (90x42x2.5in). -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College Dublin |

Please elucidate. A decent yacht varnish A generalisation but a valid one. Paint is effective because it is totally opaque and blocks the UV from getting to the substrate. Everything else which shows the wood, and hence is translucent to light and UV, will not survive as long as paint and in deteriorating will look tatty. Rob |
