Well, when we moved into our last house, it appeared that cleaning was
the
last thing on the previous owners mind (*) and in the end I dismounted
the
oven, took it in the garden and used a blowtorch and scraper on it.
Worked
a treat. I doubt you'll be able to get an enamelled metal surface hot
enough to melt to enamel with a hand-held gas blowtorch.

Grr... need to revisit this thread as my brand new tenant is complaining
that the oven is belching out smoke and tainting his food!

Been round today and given it another clean however I think the problem
is probably greasy gunk stuck on the 'ceiling' of the oven immediately
above the grill element, which is really awkward to get at as you have
to poke a cloth through narrow gaps in the element. When I turned the
oven on I got more smoke which did clear; however I couldn't do any more
then until it had all cooled down again, so I withdrew to regroup...

Obviously with someone living there I can't keep going back and forth
and need to sort this PDQ if he reports the smoke is persisting. How do
you get the element out? (It's a Baumatic built-in electric, non
fan-assisted) - that seems to me the best way forward :-(

Alternatively I've got a steam wallpaper stripper - would blasting steam
from the hose up through the gaps in the element likely to work?

If not, I fear I'll need to get an oven-cleaning pro in...
