No. They send me just one reminder each year and I pay the licence fee. Under The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, there are very few businesses that are not liable to obtain a licence. Essentially they are one-man businesses not open to the public and those that use no copyright music at all in any form, including playing a radio in the workplace and music on hold telephones.. I did some reseach recently on music on hold for phone systems - just after Tony Hart died I got a few requests for left bank two (I make phone systems)... { See: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7837849.stm } You need to buy the music (one off fee - eg. buy it on CD, mp3 format, etc.) Then you need an MCPS license - Mechanical Copyright Protection Society. This is a one-off for each *device* you install it on and is 35 per 30 seconds of music. Finally you needs the PRS license and that's variable depending on the numbe of lines you have. (Number of external lines, not internal as you don't put your own staff on hold, I guess!) It's not hard to do, but I gave up in the end. There are many copyright free "music on hold" discs available for purchase for telephone use and many similar audible wallpaper discs. Make sure it's royalty free too. If a band records out of copyright music the publisher may still have the ability to collect royalties on it. Personally, I'd not think too bad of it all if I thought the money raised actually went back to the artists... Gordon |

Someone has to pay for the MCPS Directors Bentley :-) You will be pleased to know that the PRS for Music (MCPS) has kindly decided not to make a charge for functions of a purely domestic or family nature, such as wedding receptions, christening parties or domestic birthday parties. I fail to see how a few people listening to a common radio constitutes a "performance", especially given the radio station has already paid to broadcast the music. Garages are required to have a licence if they listen to a customer's radio to do any work on it for them, so almost certainly, yes. What about in workshops that have many engineers working in them ? The company would be required to declare how many engineers and for how long, on average, they would be listening to the music each day. The alternative, mentioned elsewhere, would be to buy royalty-free music for the purpose. Colin Bignell |

I think "is listening to" rather than "can hear" otherwise you might have to pay as you pass someone using a pneumatic drill to dig up the road he might be a closet artist I think that Bruce has gone past the point where one might call him a retard. He's the dennis of the airwaves A performance is, by my definition, when musicians are actually playing this is different to a recording which is a reproduction of that performance Personally, I can't stand the banal crap pushed out by music stations. As an aside ... a couple of Years ago I was in a pub where there was music being played. They started playing a tune that I wrote - which I have to say surprised me, so I asked them about it "Oh it's a tune by geoff [me]" "Yeah, I know, that's me" My thoughts were not "gimme some money", more a sense of pride that someone wanted to play it. Its also been played on national TV. Have I made a penny out of it ? No, do I care? No Arseholes with Bruce's mentality really get on my tits - most of the "music" that he is defending is unadulterated crap for the mindless masses who are hypnotised by the skill of the scriptwriters of Neighbours and other wallpaper fodder which had dumbed down the nation, turned us into a race of vegetables Now I'm an avid watcher of QI - which I consider to be in the premier league of quiz show entertainment, but the dumbing down effect was really brought home to me last week when the one from Armstrong and Miller with a physics degree started explaining about CERN and the search for the Higgs boson. I would have thought that it was an interesting topic explained in a simple format - no, boring, boring too much information was the response Coming back to the PRS and music, such a fundament5al change is needed that maybe everyone should have a go at their MP and see if we can't get a sensible, workable format hammered out What we have now obviously is unworkable The Music industry, having ripped people off for so long has created a them and us situation whereby most people no longer feel any guilt in downloading music as they feel ripped off by the fat cats Those "musicians" who earn less than 5000/pa should possibly look for another career rather than bleating about not making money because nobody wants the crap they produce -- geoff |

OG, Funnily enough I believe that even Radio Four has some music on it - or it did the last time that I listened to it! Oh! And I believe that they do the odd drama or two on there, which may involve actors getting some cash out out of the BBC as well - and chased up by the PRS. But if that is incorrect, I stand to be corrected - especially as my OP was actually a question by the way. But as usual, someone thought it was something else directed at him. Big Grin |
