Hi all.
Just fitting a new light fitting. (halogen bulbs on a bar)
Old fitting had 2 black wires in different terminals on old
conventional fitting.
With 2 red wires twisted together in other terminal.
New light fitting instructions show diagram below.

The new fitting has its cables fixed to block connectors 4 and 6
with an earth connector fixed to block connector 5.

I think the twisted red wires should go into connector 7.
But not sure where the 2 black wires should go.

Please advise.

Hi Arthur
Looks like you have the end of line light with 1 red/black wire from the
supply and 1 red/black wire from the light switch.
If your text is wrong and the fitting is actually connected to blocks 4 & 8
NOT 4 & 6 as posted then connecting the twisted red pair to block 1 ..any
black into block 3 .. the other black into block 7 and the earth into block
5 will work.
This is not a good way as you may reverse N & L the best way is to find the
black wire which becomes live when the light is turned on (this really
should be marked with red tape as your wiring is red/black) this is the
switched live and goes in 7 .. the remaining black is neutral and goes in 3.

From your diagram I would have thought the new light was across 4 & 8 with any
earth wire connected to 6.

Therefore the two blacks should be one on 3 and one on 7 (IF one of the black is
marked with a red band, it should go to 7 but in practice makes no difference)

Your twisted reds should be in 1 with nothing in 2

The 2 reds go into 1 ( Unswitched Live. )
( 1 red is the live feed coming in, the other is the live going out to the
switch. ).

One black goes into 3 ( N ) ( the one from the incoming supply,
preferably );
Other black goes to 7 ( Sw. Live ) ( the switched live return from the
switch. )

It doesn't actually matter if you get the blacks the wrong way round, it
will just swap the L and N to the lamps, which doesn't matter.

The bare central wire from both cables should be sheathed in Green and
Yellow sleeving, and connected to 5 ( E ).

No, you need to determine which cable is your incoming feed, and which
goes to and returns from the switch.

The two reds should to 1 (or 1 and 2 if that's easier)

The black which is your neutral and should go to 3

The other black which is your switched live (it ought to have red or
brown sleeving on it) should go to 7
