Is it legal to run cables through notched out joists ?
I know the preferred option is to drill holes through the joists but
in this particular case the joist have already been notched out to a
depth of 40mm. So when you add an additional 15mm for the floor board
the depth from the surface will be 55mm.

The joist are 7" deep and the notching out has been made to accomodate
a 1" gas pipe but there is plenty of room alongside for the cables.

Gas installation pipework should be at least 25mm away from electricity
supply and distribution cables.

Hope this is not new work.
Notches in joists should be not more than 1/8 the depth of the joist for gas
pipes so a 28mm gas pipe should not even be in a 175mm joist.

No, it's not new work the gas pipe has been there for at least 20yrs.
It's a metal pipe (not copper) that runs from where the gas main
enters the property over to the kitchen.
The 25mm separation distance that you mention is that a legal
requirement or just good practice ?
BTW my initial question, concerned whether or not cables can be run in
notched out joists if they are 50mm deep.

Sorry, can't help with the cable/notch question (done it many,many times
though).

The separation is a BS regulation but if you have a look at BS 6891 8.16.1 -
2 it would seem you could probably get round it with a roll of insulating
tape.
