Good advice. You'll have plenty of time for English lessons too.

My experience is:
Takes too long to find someone to do it.
Quality of work even with reference checks is often questionable.
Must be well coined up to afford to "get a man in".

Some people have the patience to do it right and turn a sow's ear into a
silk purse. Others just tell 'porkies' about what a good job they did. Some
are 'ham' fisted. Personally I'm ok at the 'grunt' work but not the
complicated stuff.

My advice would be pay someone elese to do it.

If you earn enough then sure - you bring home the bacon and use the money to
pay a contractor.

I must 'trotter' long now and get some of my own work done.

DIY is about doing something _within_ your capability. Thereby ensuring a
good, reliable, and clean result.

My advice would be pay someone elese to do it.

This could be bad advice. There are far too many "cowboys" about.

I've been changing the diaphragm in my Chaffoteaux Britony II T water heater
from new (I recently renewed the third one).
There's nothing boring about doing it. And by taking my time, I'm convinced
that the work is at least as good as a good (excuse the pun) professional's
(if not better).
P.S. How much would it cost me to have this done?
I would be unhappy if I had to rely on a handyman to put up shelves, toilet
cabinet, etc...

Sylvain.

"You will, xxx, you will"

The answer is James McNeill Whistler (of painting his mother fame) to
his friend Oscar Wilde after the latter had remarked that he wished
that he had made some particularly witty remark.

Whistler wasn't exactly the most savoury of characters either. He
successfully sued John Ruskin for his published review of one of his
paintings (something about throwing a pot of paint in the public's
face) but won damages of a farthing.

He also made great merriment and mocked Wilde after he announced that
he batted for the other side.

All three were interesting characters. John Ruskin, of course, wrote
the immortal words that everybody should live by:

€œIt is unwise to pay too much €“ but it is unwise to pay too
little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money that is all.
When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything because the thing
you bought was incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and
getting a lot €“ it cant be done.

If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something
for the risk you run. And if you do that you will have enough to pay
for something better.€?

Anyone see Tarrant on TV tonight? One bit was an ad for a IIRC Norwegian
Gay Pride week, and featured an animation of a sperm swimming along, and
along, then realising it was wasting its time and turning round...
