Maxie, it is clear you have no taste at all. You think BMWs are cool, when
even pillocks like Clarkson would not allow in on the cool board at all, not
even to be hot.

So you value the opinion of someone you consider a pillock?

Perhaps that's why you think people should take advice from you?

Ok, what has a Prius got to do with DIY ?

Apart from the fact that cars/technology like it may actually help save
this world from it's current self destruction due to the current
occupant's obsession with 1mpg gas guzzling 4x4's just used to go down

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid. 0-60 in 7.3 secs, if you are interested in
that sort of childishness.

29mpg - who are they trying to fool that this is environmentally
friendly?

The idea with hybrid cars is supposed to be that they are more fuel
efficient. My car can manage 65mpg happily with a normal engine - and
still stays above 50mpg with 4 adults onboard and a shedload of stuff
in the back (it's an estate).

If you follow the link that you supplied for the specs of the Toyota
Highlander Hybrid and look about half way down page 6 (just above where
it says "Note: Highlander Hybrid in 2WD or 4WD-i is not designed to be
driven off-road") you will see the official fuel consumtion figures:

2WD:
City 33mpg
Freeway 28mpg
Combined 30mpg

4WD-i
City 31mpg
Freeway 27mpg
Combined 29mpg

Compared to most US 4x4s the Highlander is. It also reduces emissions
drastically in built up areas which is one of the prime aims. Keeps the
filth away from the lungs of millions..

Apparently there is a class action suit against Toyata in the US now on
the grounds that real users are finding the 60+ mpg advertising claims
unachievable in real world conditions.

Auto Expresses long term Prius returned 65mpg. So that suit will fail.

Yup. Autocar managed 43 mpg in their touring test. A BMW 320d - much
faster in every way - 48.

If that was the main reason, they'd use a diesel, not petrol engine.

But diesels ain't popular in the US - its main market. Its real purpose is
low emissions in towns with heavy traffic were it can run several miles on
batteries alone producing zero emissions at that point in time. Of course
those batteries then need to be recharged by the petrol engine producing
just as much emissions as any other similarly sized car, simply shifting
the place that those emissions occur. And with poorer than average CO
emissions when touring (its mpg then is poor) it does nothing to save the
planet. ;-)

The latest incarnation of this technology from Toyota is the Lexus RX400H
- a 'chelsea tractor' type vehicle. This certainly is a class leader in
fuel efficiency although it's gone back to a conventional V-6 petrol
engine. Not that it's difficult to be a class leader here as no vehicle of
this type is ever good due to heavy weight and lossy trasmissions for off
road use. Lexus have solved this at a stroke. It can't be used for off
load or heavy towing.

My car can manage 65mpg happily with a normal engine - and
still stays above 50mpg with 4 adults onboard and a shedload of stuff
in the back (it's an estate).

A quick glance at any road test summaries - not makers adverts - shows
any diesel of similar size and performance uses a deal less fuel than the
Prius in everyday use. Oh - and some petrol ones too. And they also cost
less. Much less, in fact.

Autocar got an overall fuel consumption of 23 mpg with the Prius - far
worse than any similar performance diesel.

All the Prius is good for is as a town car used continually in very heavy
traffic. Where you'd be better off using PT.

Just had a look.... how many models of Prius do they do?

Because the only one I could find, they said managed sixty in a rather
sedate 11 secs. That may not be the slowest vehicle on the road, but it
is certainly not "no time at all"...

It is supposed to get to 60 in two weeks reading you and your fellow
loonpots here and do 23mpg too. It keeps up with them and outperforms a BMW
5 series in mid acceleration.

The new Highlander hybrid gets to 60 in 7.3 secs, if you like silliness of

What a fool. Only if you compare it with a manual 5 Series in the wrong
gear for best acceleration.

Since the Prius has a CVT auto transmission, the fair comparison would be
with an auto whatever.

Hmm. Quoting from a number of internet pages: Prius, Latin for "go before"

Unfortunately the name is rather close to the unfortunate condition called
"priapism".

As someone in the market for a fuel efficient car, I have been attracted to
the Prius. I am a little uncertain about the high purchase price, the
cosmetic issues, and more importantly, about the resale value (dealers don't
appear to like it because of uncertainties about the new technology. A
problem that Citroens have suffered from for a number of years thanks to
their unconventional suspension).

The good news is that Toyota (and a few others) have more hybrid cars in the
pipeline in the near future. Lets hope they can continue to improve.

John.
