Default Bath taps - standard fit?

Okay, this is a really, really daft question, but as I'm considering
replacing the taps on our "plastic" bath, I think it prudent to ask...
Do all (within the last 10 years) "mixer" taps (the ones with the
telephone-styled shower hose) have the same mounting - both mounting
centres and bore?, Can I really just buy a new tap, pull the old one,
and expect it to fit in place easily?

Regards

Yes!

Not quite.

My daughter purchased an end of line bath tap, the one with the
telephone cradle for a shower head, from Homebase for £5-00 less 10% end
of line reduction.
I measured the diam. of the tap pipe connection and made sure that it
was the same as the ones I was taking out. I measured the pitch of both
the hot and cold taps, to ensure that the new taps would fit (new taps
were connected together). All's well, so far.

After much sweat and cursing, I got both of the old taps free from the
bath, only to find that the bath did not have round holes, but square
ones. This was the only snag in the change.

I put RTV 732 under the new taps and liberally spread it around the
upper face of the bath, where the square holes were. I'll go back and
pretty up the upper sealant soon, but to answer your question, old pre
metric taps came out and modern ones (I presume metric) ones went back in.

HTH
