selection of gas hobs. I have to have it in 2 days time, thus the lack of
mail-order option. Homebase and B&Q are crap in both price and selection

Comet or Curry's? The Co op do electrical goods if you have one of their
home
furnishing places near you. I'm sure there are independent retailers too.

When looking for the same around four or five months ago I was
disappointed at the quality/price of the units seen in most of the
stores or sheds.


In the end I purchased, for around £100, a Delonghi hob from Comet [1].

IMO this hob is better quality than a lot of other hobs at 2 or 3 times
the price. The hob is stainless steel that is not paper thin and has
heavy cast pan racks. The controls were a lot more positive than I found
on other brands.

The Comet web site has a large range of hobs. Not all are in the stores
but a couple of the Delonghi were stocked in the store closest to me.

Unfortunately (and incredibly!) all three do not do the Hotpoint gas hob I'm
looking for (a G750T ... quite a standard model!). I'm starting to ring
places I've Google'd now to see if anyone can deliver on time!

promotion that was, for once, a genuinely good deal.

With hobs it pays to look at the pan supports carefully: on some hobs
a slightly off-centre pan is very liable to tip over.

Ruislip, so Slough's not too far off. They don't have what I'm looking for
and they're a little expensive on what they do have unfortunately.

Not in stock, but the Baumatic P68 looks ok, which is in. Just not sure
about the central wok stand - looks like it's flat (the case iron grid),
which doesn't lend itself to safe wok use!

Exactly what I was going to say. I would have bought my Neff T2970 5
burner gas hob from them (at Bluewater) had I not already got it from
Alders closing down sale. Lots of hobs on pull out drawers.

On the advice of a chef friend I deliberately did not buy a hob with a
wok burner because, he said, they do not have burners that are
sufficiently powerful enough to do a wok justice in the home (and he
bought the same Neff as me).

If you really want a wok burner look at the Neff Domino range. A trifle
dear tho'. M-I-L had a pair of Domino electric units plus deep fat
fryer. Very tasty ;-)

Didn't have what I was looking for.

Used Keek in the end on the recommendation of another poster and ordered a
Baumatic one instead. They assure me they'll do everything they can to get
it here on Thursday even though their lead time is normally 5-7 days. If it
arrives on time I will be very impressed indeed - they were a pleasure (so
far) to deal with on the phone.

Well it's true compared to restaurant hobs for sure. However it's
significantly more heat output than my current (and annoyingly flat ... so
quite dangerous with my round-bottomed woks) hob so it can only improve
things. I believe the Baumatic one I've gone for gives 3.3kW on the wok
burner. They do have a 4.5kW model with separate flames for the wok for
finer control and more power, but it's over £100 dearer for just that
feature. Can't buy the best of everything unfortunately ...
