Anybody know of a good and effective ant killer. We have thousands of the
buggers outside on my drive. They appear to be living under it as there are
a few 'exit' holes in-between the slabs. I have tried a supermarket bought
product called Raid but after a day or so they come back. How do you get
rid of them?

TIA

It helps if you know their natural history.

Ah, well...first there were two, then there *should* have been three (I
jumped the gun a bit) but it
didn't arrive when it was supposed to. Expecting the arrival of shed three I
demolished shed two which was, frankly, ****e. The elusive shed three,
therefore, is, or will be, shed two mk.2 even though it's not here yet. Shed
one is currently up to full capacity but is looking happy in its solitude.
The old shed two must have been a nightmare to live next to; always whinging
about its leaky roof, broken windows, poorly-fitting door etc., I imagine
shed one is enjoying the rest.

Did it contain an ant's nest?

Nah - get some thinners and pour it over the nest, then set fire to it

much more fun, and it works

I replied with the following to an earlier thread.
I always use some stuff from the pet shop which is supposed to be used
for killing mites in pigeon coops. I think its called duramitex and is
about £5 a bottle. A bottle mixed with a watering can of water and
draw a line around the house with it. Seems to last all summer.

To which someone else replied -

Eeeeeeek! That stuff contains Malathion - an organophosphate poison. Be
careful with it. If you spray it, avoiding breathing the vapour. Also avoid
getting it on your skin - wash it off quickly if you do. The same chemical
is in Derbac - an over the counter treatment for human parasites such as
lice and scabies.

I just use it poured from a watering can with no rose on it. I specifically
only use the watering can for this though.

For many years I have used a mixture of borax and icing sugar (about 50/50
with a little water) this is very effective. They are attracted to the icing
sugar which they then carry back to share with their mates - that's what you
need to do, get the stuff into the nest, it's no use trying to kill them off
a few at a time.

Yes, borax is amazingly effective.

If they do not enter your house, I would be inclined to ignore them. If,
however, they do come inside your home, then buy some Ant Bait. It comes in
a square box, about 2 inches, by about one quarter of an inch thick (it
could be white or yellow plastic, not too sure what colour they are using
now) . You poke a hole in one or more blanks in it and set it down close the
nest. I have found that within a few days, no ants are found within a few
feet of this bait. It lasts about 2 to 3 months before you have to put down
a new one and it kills the whole nest.

It is not suitable for use where the rain can get to it though. I have found
that all other types of dusting powder have not been anything like useful,
but this one has not let me down yet.

I'll second that. The little yellow box was completely ineffective but
Nippon works a treat. I put quite a bit down on a small piece of plastic
over several days. The ants that find it initially seem to report back yo
yhe rest of the nest and soon you get hordes of them all feeding on the
Nippon gel.

Shortly after you see no more ants!

As neither my wife, or myself is certain where the nest is, we cover the
three walls that they might live outside. One pack goes at the front door,
one under the kitchen units on the gable wall and the last one under the
kitchen window.
First sign of an ant in the spring and down goes the ant bait. The result,
is that we see no more ants for about 3 months.
It works for me and works for the local school, so it must do something
right.
I have to add, though, that there are certainly more than 3 nests around us,
as we see ants in the back garden all summer.

Regards

Dave

Performance does seem to vary according to circumstances.
I bought some bait boxes manufactured by Johnson (who do the Raid products).
They didn't work so I called their customer care line. They explained that
if the ants had a better source of food then they might not go for the bait.
No quibbles, they refunded my money.
Nick.

Nipon liquid (not Nipon powder). They take it back to the nest and they all
perish. Dribble it into the cracks / holes.

Yes - Nipon is extremely effective. And you can watch the little buggers
lap the stuff up. I've used it before now and the ants had all died within
48 hours. Shame I can't use it on my neighbours teenage daughter and her

That's because they're not industrious like worker ants, and they
certainly don't take food back for the rest of the nest.... :-)

Please tell me, where can I buy the Nipon or Borax that's been mentioned? I
get thousands of flying ants in the house every year and can't get rid of
them. The bug-guy said I will have to find their nest but that it could be
anywhere. When they come it's like a horror movie they get into everything
and it's driving my wife mad. Thanks.

It's Nippon Ant Killer Liquid - in a white, red and black tube. The bigger,
30ml, size is better value for money. We get ours at the local hardware
store. Probably available at most diy sheds and garden centres, too. I
think we paid about £2.50 for a tube.

The instructions don't say anything about flying ants, so suggest you check
that first.

You can see and read about it on the web, but rather than post a long URL
here, just google for "nippon ant killer liquid" (include the quotes).

Hope it works OK

Well, there's not much you can do about flying ants, it's the queen and
the males having an orgy and only happens once

By the time they start swarming, it's too late

Borax (sodium tetraborate) can be bought from most chemists - or could.
Amongst other things, it is used as a detergent.

Two days ago my son mixed sugar with some of our regular laundry detergent
(because he had heard it contained borax) and applied it to a small ants
nest next to our driveway.
I'll observe effect if any and report back
Terry.
PS. Small blackish ants which seem to be everywhere but rarely come into the
house; rarely even into our below ground concrete unfinished walls basement.
Where however we occasionally see 'wood lice' here called "Carpenters".

Buy the following from the pet sto
Harkers DURAMITEX and follow the instructions, it's normally used for
killing mites in pigeon lofts, but it's permanently fatal to ants...we

used
it three years ago after having ants in the house every year for five

years
and have never seen one back to this day. Regards, Phil

Anybody know of a good and effective ant killer. We have thousands of

the
buggers outside on my drive. They appear to be living under it as there

are
a few 'exit' holes in-between the slabs. I have tried a supermarket

bought
product called Raid but after a day or so they come back. How do you

get
rid of them?

TIA

John
