Default Coupling shafts....

If I understand the issue, you just want a bit of flexibility in
the end-to-end coupling of two shafts? There's lots of
gizmos for this, but the easiest is just to use a flexible
coupling. It could be as easy as a length of vinyl tubing
(but that won't take weather/UV exposure well), or a
bellows with fittings on each end (www.smallparts.com
is one shaft-coupler supplier, if your wallet is healthy...).

On the other hand, you could connect the generator shaft
rigidly to the drive shaft, then 'float' the generator
connection to the frame.

Just use a Lovejoy coupler, and be done with it.

How much forgiveness in straightness/alignment is there in these
lovejoys? +/- .010? .060?
Any angular spec?

The Buna-N spiders are the most tolerant. I abused one nearly to
failure on my sawmill and the cracking was visible without taking it
apart.
