opinion on this lathe?
All I have right now is a pic:
http://www.metalworking.com/dropbox/YAM1440.jpg I had never heard of YAM before, but the little I can find on the web seems to indicate it is pretty good Japanese iron. It is $5000 obo, which I think is a bit high? Assuming it can be cleaned up, what is a "fair" price for a machine like this, and would it be a good first lathe? The advantage is that it is local pickup, so I can check it out. Thanks, Rick |

That is a heavy 14-40 with the cast iron base and a DRO. Well worth five
grand if it works. Probably $24k new, believe it or not. I had a YAM lathe come through a year or so ago and wish I'd kept it - it was NICE. Might be 440 only though, look into it carefully.
