opinion on this lathe?
 
All I have right now is a pic:

I had never heard of YAM before, but the little I can find on the web seems to
indicate it is pretty good Japanese iron.

It is $5000 obo, which I think is a bit high? Assuming it can be cleaned up,
what is a "fair" price for a machine like this, and would it be a good first
lathe? The advantage is that it is local pickup, so I can check it out.

That is a heavy 14-40 with the cast iron base and a DRO. Well worth five
grand if it works. Probably $24k new, believe it or not. I had a YAM lathe
come through a year or so ago and wish I'd kept it - it was NICE. Might be
440 only though, look into it carefully.
