Spear shaft material?
https://www.facebook.com/Celts.Royal...5525176572271/
Now Ive got the bug to build a hunting spear. What is the best wood to use for the shaft? It needs to be not real springy, tough, not brittle. Ash? Hickory? What others will be good for a minimum 6' long shaft at least 1 1/4" in diameter? Gunner __ "Poor widdle Wudy...mentally ill, lies constantly, doesnt know who he is, or even what gender "he" is. No more pathetic creature has ever walked the earth. But...he is locked into a mental hospital for the safety of the public. Which is a very good thing." In my neck o' the woods about 5 miles north on SR9 on the left alongside the road . You might try a business that caters to specialized woods for exotic projects . Where you are you might try for a chunk of lemon wood . Actually , hickory is also a decent choice , as long as the grain is straight and knot-free . -- Snag Yes , I'm old and crochety - and armed . Osage Orange is a hard dense wood but unless you've had some experience with it I wouldn't advise for a first time project. YMMV |

Gunner I'd start with pine so you haven't lost much when a bad practice throw breaks it. I made a javelin to practice with when I was on the high school track team. Tapering and rounding the ends took a lot of careful hand work, and throwing both hard and straight isn't easy. You could modify a Warren hoe: https://www.lowes.com/pd/True-Temper...n-Hoe/50223309 These expertly made ancient spears were spruce and pine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sch%C3%B6ningen_spears "They have been worked very thoroughly and are evidence of highly developed technological skills and of a workmanlike tradition....In their throwing qualities, the Schöningen Spears are equal to modern tournament javelins." |

You'll have to carve it from a green limb. |

You'll have to carve it from a green limb. Ive actually played with an atal atal. Couldnt hit **** with it...yet both of my buddies were hitting a hay bail within an hour of being shown how to do it. Hell..I SHOWED em how to do it. And I still couldnt get it to fly anywhere close to the direction I wanted it to go....sigh. Maybe I should try it again..... __ "Poor widdle Wudy...mentally ill, lies constantly, doesnt know who he is, or even what gender "he" is. No more pathetic creature has ever walked the earth.
