Default New use for microwave oven

New to me but undoubtedly someone has done this before. I have a 1981
4.5 HP Johnson outboard motor. I was picking up some chairs my wife
had bought from one of her clients and the client offered me this old
outboard motor. Since my last outboard motor was ruined by the person
who borrowed it I was interested. But I didn't want something that was
actually an anchor so I said if it was easy to turn over I would take
it. Not buy it, just take it off the guy's hands. It turned over
easily so I put it in the truck with the chairs. When I got it home I
stuck a screwdriver in a sparkplug boot, held the shank, and turned
the motor over. I got a pretty good tingle so I decided the motor was
worth a little time. I sprayed some starting fluid into the carb and
the motor ran so then I hooked it up to a gas tank but (no surprise)
no gas would flow through the carb. Removing the carb I found water in
the float bowl. No water in the rest of the carb, none in the engine,
and no signs of water anywhere besides the float bowl. That was weird,
only finding water in the carb. I cleaned everything up, reassembled
the carb and bolted it to the engine. The engine started right up
(hooray!) but then flooded right away. I could see gas flowing out of
the carb. The cork float was waterlogged. Since there is no way for me
to get a new float on a Sunday I decided to dry the cork float out. In
a microwave oven. And it worked! Amazing. The float grew in diameter by
about .125" and thickness by about .05". But the float bowl has room.
Tomorrow I am ordering a new float and float valve. I would have made
a new one out of brass sheet but the float is a torus and that is too
much work to make.

Bravo!!

Ive got 2 outboards..a 5hp Gale made in 1963 and a Sailmaster 9.9 no
idea when it was made. Really hard to kill an outboard. Stuff may
fall OFF..but they nearly always run.

Guy offered me a Seagull..but with California about water
quality...cringe..I turned it down.

Great! congrats. Maybe splash swamp. sputter, sputter, die.

I have an old but working kitchen oven that fans the heat - convection -
and a large cavity. Second hand, we have a nice one inside. Shop
heats the welding rods in it and whatever. Now to scrounge a microwave
for some tasks like that. Hum - moving bench to new workroom so need
another bench....

It's easy to kill an outboard: give it to someone who doesn't understand
the concept of putting oil into gasoline.

My outboard is a 3 HP Johnson that my Dad and I bought new in 1954. It
ran fine the last time I used it (1981). It probably has less than 100
hours on the clock. One of these days I should get it out and see if
it will run. That and the other 97 projects on the book. Ah well, the
grand Daughters go back to the other London on Thursday so might get
back to normal sometime.

Ayup. Sure does. A weekend and it would be in the water. I did a
hell of a lot more refurbishment to the other E20 I own and I sail it
regularly now.

Once the port is put back in and the mast is installed..she can be
sailed and cleaned up at leisure.

I should mention again..for anyone who is interested in sailing..boats
are readily available and cheap!

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/freesailboats/info

Slightly more expensive ones

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/sailboatstuff/info

We have some interesting cheap boats too..

http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/boa/4636308897.html

All over the country

http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/boa/4632296700.html

http://austin.craigslist.org/boa/4637376287.html

http://collegestation.craigslist.org...631534510.html

And some that need little work at all

http://nmi.craigslist.org/boa/4635844009.html

Others will need a few weekends.

http://centralmich.craigslist.org/boa/4627646695.html

1976 Bayliner Buccaneer 270 Sailboat Project - $500 (barryton)

I have a 1976 Bayliner Buccaneer 270 sailboat that I don't have time
to finish. It is sitting on a cradle on a heavy duty trailer. Mast,
all rigging, sails, interior cushions, AC/DC refridgerator, alcohol
stove are all included. The interior is gutted so this is NOT water
ready. I have 6 brand new Beckson windows that come with the boat.
This would be a great project for someone who has the time to invest
in it. This is a shallow draft boat so it will go a lot of places that
conventional fin keel boats won't. The trailer alone is worth more
than I'm asking for the whole thing. A standard 1/2 ton truck will
pull it just fine. For more information call me at the contact info
listed.

Thats a 27' boat btw...

And its not just a summer sport

http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/boa/4627995672.html

I spend anywhere from 5-10 hours a week finding these and posting them

Then of course...the Sailboat Stuff boats...

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/boa/4636178509.html

Someone might be interested in either one of theses...they both are
excellent brands

http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/boa/4631406593.html

Iggy..you should check that ad out.. the Irwin would fit you like a
glove and it doesnt even need paint

It needs a complete mast assembly, sail, and all cabling, windows,
upholstery, rudder, etc. Lots more than a $50 mast.

But $0 is a mighty good deal if you want a sailboat.

Mast AND "cables" (shrouds) and lines (ropes) will set you back about
$200 in Long Beach. Lots of boat yards with masts in piles. Simply
cut it off at the bottom if its too long. or leave it long.

Window is there and only the trim on the outside needs to be
straightened out with pliers. Might take you 30 minutes. Glass is
fine. A tube of silcone will seal it properly. Rudder, sails,
everything else is there and in good condition. Someone stole the
mast for the aluminum. Not realizing that mast weighed about 35 lbs
though its 25' long.

Ive already cleaned out the crap and its pretty nice inside.
Seriously. The outside...it was parked under a tree for 20 yrs and
its covered with bird **** and So Cal smog. First thing you do is
get a big bottle of Dawn detergent, a bucket and a spounge mop and
simply coat the entire boat with it. Wait about 30 minutes..then use
the sponge mop to start breaking up the goop. Hose well. Then repeat.
You could hit it with a pressure washer..but a mop, a bucket and a
quart of Dawn will set you back $10.

If you are wanting it to be pretty..pick up a Wen polisher and mitt
from a yard sail, a $10 tub of polishing compound and you are golden.

Ive done it before several times and have some idea of the
procedure...chuckle.

I brought home another one this morning when I came home.

Gunner

You could be. Or I could be. Its not hard to find masts. Lots of
boat yards up north as well.

I'd like to get some alone-time with some of these thieves. Wouldn't
you?

Ayup. But it happened sometime in the past 20 yrs. Guy died without
any surviving kin and it took 12 yrs for the city of Costa Mesa to get
title to the house. Ive mentioned they took dune buggies and a GTO
and other stuff out of the garage along with all the other goodies a
rich guy could have in his dotage.

Ive done it before several times and have some idea of the
procedure...chuckle.

I'll bet!

I brought home another one this morning when I came home.

Another Freebie?

Pretty much so. This is now sitting in front of my house

Finally. Did the last wheel bearings (port side) Friday morning, did
the starboard side a week ago Friday and fixed the lights and brought
her home after finishing my service calls for the week. Stopped at
Castaic for a short nap..slept for almost 6 hours..sigh..went over the
mountain and got home at 6 am Saturday morning. Did the internet
thing and went right back to sleep. I worked out in the 107 heat
Wed-Thursday sorting through parts and moving trash and treasures
around in my buddies shops yard so we can start rebuilding a G&L
horizontal mill he bought some years ago.
