Default OT - Anyone planning to evacuate from Irene?

Is anyone starting to plan evacuation out there? The latest models show the
eye going right over my garage. g I'm only 6 miles from salt water, but
I'm at 115 feet of altitude, so I'm going to ride it out. The storm surge
*could* wind up re-shaping the barrier islands of NJ, like one did just
under a century ago.

It doesn't look good.

I'm thinking about it. We are kind of protected by big old trees. What I'm
worried about is one of those big old trees coming through my roof.

No generator, and I used the last of the gas in the lawnmower this week. If
it looks bad, we're headed west. I have a case of water and food and clothes
for a few days in the trunk.

It's not too late to pick up an inverter
to run your fridge off your car electricals
for an hour a day.

Thanks for the thought, Winston, but I'm not going to get trapped here. If
it's a high Category 2 and headed straight for us, we're gone.

And we only have a hurricane hit hard about once per century. d8-)

I'll take my earthquakes any day.

I don't think about them unless they are happening

they've already happened.

Of course, you'd take everything frozen or refrigerated with
you. Leave the fridge off, door to fridge and freezer
propped open.

And don't forget to gas up the car/fill all the gas cans -before-
doing the shopping for long-term outages.

So, what's the story on inverters? What can and can't you run on
them? What's the figure on horsepower for them? I've heard you can't
run very large motors, like an electric chainsaw, on them. Does
anybody here have much experience with them?

Regarding evacuations, I don't expect to leave for Irene. You, Win?

But if something were to head my way, I'd pack up the valuables and
leave at the first hint of evacuation, way before it was official.
Traffic out of town is likely to be deadly for at least 24 hours
before the official word leaks out, 48 hours before it's officially
released, especially in very large urban areas.

I really should stock up a second (and maybe 3rd) BOB.

I've had extremely good luck with them.
I have the great-grandfather of this unit:
http://www.harborfreight.com/750-wat...ter-66817.html

I've run my 5-1/4" circular saw, my Makita angle grinder
and my refrigerator during a power outage with it from
my car battery (One at a time with engine running).
No problemo. It Just Works.

No, but the 40 pounds of striped bass and bluefish
is a temptation.

Yup. Silicon Gulch during the Loma Prieta shaker was
pretty congested.

I can tell you it's too late to buy a generator anywhere within 3
hours of the Jersey-PA border. I had a generator I've been trying to
sell for several months - nothing wrong with it and it was priced
right; there just wasn't any demand. With the storm coming, I posted
it again Thursday night in the Harrisburg, PA craigslist since it's
been about 6 weeks since the last posting. I've been bombarded with
emails and phone calls from people as far away as NJ, MD, and the DC
area. Most are 3+ hours away. I sold it this evening to a young
couple from the Allentown area who drove 2 hours to get here. Some of
the callers sounded really desperate. I sold it for what I had in it,
but I probably could have raised the price and still sold it. I spent
a lot of time returning calls and emails this evening so that people
knew where they stood in line in case the purchaser didn't show.
(I had made the arrangements this AM for him to see it and held it for
him to arrive at 8 PM this evening. )

Any stores still open? Go fill up the car, and the gascans.
Maybe a neighbor will be out of gas. Can bring his generator
over, run your sump pump and window AC for an hour, exchange
for some gasoline.

I'm right in the line of fire (four mile drive from the George
Washington Bridge), and I'm gonna hunker down and enjoy the show.

I'm most concerned about a tree, more-or-less across the street from
me, that has been functionally dead for years. A couple of years ago,
in a big storm, half of it fell and took out my power for five days.
The other half is likely to go this weekend, and I'll be very ****ed
off. The homeowner* (too cheap to take care of his fsking tree) is
away on vacation.

I do have a generator and plenty of gas. I ran the generator yesterday
afternoon (I run it for 10 minutes or so every three months just to
cook off any condensed water in the oil). I also have a ****load of
batteries (maybe 500 pounds of lead-acids in various UPS devices and a
bunch for flashlights and radios), and another ****load of candles.

Tomorrow, I'll finish moving all my basement shop stuff at least a
foot and a half off the floor.

Being this prepared, I fully expect the storm to be nothing more than
a breeze a drizzle.

*BTW, before anyone starts making political attacs on the owner of the
threatening tree, I should point out that he's a god-damned Canadian.

Doesn't anyone have hurricane parties any more? Common in Florida.
Plenty of drink and food to party on. Of course houses in Florida are
supposed to be built to withstand a 150 mph wind. Trees crashing down
and flying debree are what you have to watch out for. I been through a
number of hurricanes in Florida.

If the wind direction doesn't shift and the barometer keeps falling the
eye is coming right at you. If the wind starts to shift and the
barometer remains steady the eye is moving parallel to you. Of course
the worst place is not the eye but if the eye passes to the near left of
you where the strongest winds are and also the longest substained winds are.

It was pretty much a non event at our house. We did get a lot of
rain, but not close to the prediction of 12 to 14 inches. The creek
is up and out of its banks, but it has been higher as a result of
thunderstorms. The power stayed on which is good as I can hear the
sump pump running every once in a while. Still pretty breezy outside,
but looking from the house I can not see any trees or limbs down.

Default OT - Anyone planning to evacuate from Irene?

I appear to be outside the storm effect band. Which, is fine
with me. No need to evacuate. Power still on, cable internet
still working.

Looks serious, but fairly limited area of damage.

Being this prepared, I fully expect the storm to be nothing more than
a breeze a drizzle.

Our power was out 5am Sunday through 10pm Sunday. Cable & internet
were out from about 11am to a few minutes after the power came back
(I'm thinking Time Warner doesn't have enough backup power). My
generator carried the load for my house and ran three neighbors' sump
pumps as well.

We (the neighbors and I) consumed a pint of bourbon.

All in all, it could have been much worse for me. One of my customers,
in East Brunswick, has five feet of water in his (finished and
furnished) basement.

All it takes is one failed UPS on a CATV system to take everything
down. BTDT, and repaired the pole mounted UPS in the shop.

The cable stayed up for about five hours after the power failed. I
don't think this was an equipment failure, I think it was undersized
batteries. Ever seen the batteries in a Verizon central office?
They're about as big as a small house. And next to them is the multi-
fueled generator.

What really burns me is that the Time Warner guy (in Buffalo, NY) who
ansered the phone last night, a full eight hours after the failure,
had absolutely zero information on the nature of the failure. Couldn't
tell me the size of the affected area, couldn't give me a clue about
who was working where to fix it, Nothing. This is the 21st century.
The Information Age. They advertise high-end, broadband, business-
class service (and yes, I am a business customer). They simply don't
know how to deal with this kind of event. And that's not acceptable.

That earthquake shook one of my lathes so that it was tapering a couple
of thousandths per foot and I had a job on Thursday that required
holding a thousandth in a seven inch bore and turn. I wondered at first
why it was tapering so much and then realized that it got shook by the
quake. It normally cut straight within a tenth or two for the length of
the lathe.

I guess next month we get the locusts.

Ed,

Sounds like your using good judgment; let us know what happened when
your dug out and your internet is back up..

Good Luck!

Thanks, Erik. The likelihood is that it will wobble off the median path
before it gets here, so we'll probably get a lot of rain and some wind, but
the chance of damaging wind is probably less than even. We will evacuate,
however, if it looks like we're the target.

If I disappear after Saturday night, I'm either in the next state or my ISP
is down.

Thanks, TMT. Don't worry about us hanging around if it looks really bad.
We're too high to worry about storm surge, and I can handle the rain. But if
the sustained wind is going to be over 70 mph, we're gone.

Your biggest problem is the large trees around your house. The ground
gets soggy and the roots pull up and over they go. If you stay sleep
in the bathtub. unless you have one of those flimsy fiberglass tubs
then sleep under your bed.
